Have yourself a local little Christmas

Posted Thursday, November 25, 2010, at 9:00 PM

This blog is being posted at the dawn Black Friday, "dawn" being as soon as the last store closes at the end of Thanksgiving 2010. By the time you read this (assuming anyone does) the big-eat day will be just past. Oldest son and his clan will have come, the women folk will have fixed more than could be unfixed in one day, and me and Ken will have watched any and all available FOOTBALL! There is a malicious rumor there was a great-grandchild invited for the occasion. Knowing for certainty that only very OLD people have great-grandchildren, I can neither confirm nor deny this rumor.

Now the hard part begins -- Shopping for those infamous "holidays."

Two weeks past our daughter and No. 1 daughter-in-law conspired together to assign names of each family to buy presents for designated assignee (did I get that right?). The idea is this procedure insures everyone gets something when the family gathers for Christmas. The family gathering now totals around 30, so assigning names seems good policy.

The more learned among us know how to handle the onslaught of the "holidays" -- we are all husbands with wives who like to shop.

I myself do not shop for Christmas presents. If there is something I want to give a particular person, I find that. As indicated above for all other gifting God invented women.

Not liking to buy should not be confused with having nothing to sell.

An insert was included in The Brazil Times of Nov. 24, to promote Old Fashion Jewelry and Computer Central. In the interest of full-disclosure, our son Nathan owns and operates the latter business. Also, for better or worse, I conceived and approved the layout for Computer Central's side of the flyer; including the phrase "have yourself a local little Christmas." (Somebody please tell me they saw it!)

Mostly, as the astute reader may have inferred, Christmas shopping is not something I desire to encourage. This blatant self-promotion insert, however, seemed justified in the interest of encouraging the wives of this world to take a closer look at what local businesses have to offer -- during the "holidays" and all year round.

Were you aware there are over 400 business entities listed in Clay County; including Carbon, Center Point, Clay City, Coal City, Poland, etc.? Even if you can't find just exactly the right thing for that person whose name you were assigned, local business deserves a look-see. Who knows but what the perfect gift can be just a perfect purchased locally.

It may be easier, even ultimately necessary to go to the big city for this or that. But local jobs (and tax base!) depend on local business staying local whenever possible. The prosperity of next year's Thanksgiving will be more assured by all if you have yourself a local little Christmas this year. Personally, I recommend you start at Old Fashion Jewelry and Computer Central.
