An Introduction

Posted Monday, May 19, 2008, at 10:46 AM

Hello, reader. If you have been reading The Brazil Times long, you may have read one or two of my Letters to the Editor that has been graciously printed there. You may have wondered who I am.

I am a 53-year-old man who grew up in Owen, Greene and Clay counties. I spent my formative years living on the rural routes of Freedom, Patricksburg and Coal City and in the towns of Worthington, Bowling Green and Clay City.

I graduated from Clay City High School in 1973 and two weeks later, was standing on yellow footprints at Marine Corps Recruiting Depot, San Diego.

Courtesy of the Marine Corps and Uncle Sam, I have visited more than 40 counties, in some of which I wasn't even shot at. I spent 12 years in the Corps and, should they call, I will shave my head, grab my gear and go.

I have worked in a variety of fields, but I would not call myself an expert in anything. I have been a problem solver, in my own way, for several companies, some of which didn't realize that there was a problem until they saw the solution.

As I am now disabled to the point where I can no longer say when or if I will be able to do something, even walk out to the car, I have time to look into things. Unanswered questions bother me.

Recently, I ran for a position on the Clay Community Schools Board of Trustees. I was not elected, but, then, I did not expect to win. I'm not one to tell people what they want to hear. I simply state my opinion based upon facts known to me. The facts can be unappealing and the truth is often ugly.

My biggest pet peeve is when public officials spend tax dollars while receiving little or no value for the taxpayer. Education across America if failing to educate about one in every four high school students to the point of receiving a diploma. Right now, I'm watching the Clay Community Schools Corporation very closely because I think that their proposed building project spends too much money while doing little to improve education, but, should the county decide to pave our roads with diamonds or a town decide to put gold leaf on their water tower without good reason, I will have something to say about that. LOL.

Thank you for your time and God bless America.

Leo you need a hobby. Your political platform was soundly defeated on election night and now it is spilled milk time for you. It is obvious you have too much time on your hands and feel that you are omnipotent. Maybe you would do the majority of us a favor and take up needlepoint or going to work for a carpet company to lower the allergen levels.

If you are so concerned about saving the tax payers money, then I am wondering what you are doing to stop the war? We are spending billions of dollars there and not getting much out of it!

Maybe that would do global good to focus your time and energy on that front!

God Bless America!

Thank you for having served our country in the armed forces! You have indeed earned the right to speak your opinion. Unlike most in this county, I believe it is acceptable to have an opinion that is different from the vocal majority.

I'm not interested in what you are doing to stop the war. That is none of my business, and I'm pretty sure there is little you can do other than express your feelings by voting in the national election.

Madmom, Leo gets one vote in the presidential election like we all do. That's all an individual citizen can do to stop the war. What else do you expect him to do?

Bruther

He can launch into retoric about it like he does our school. Maybe that would make the rest of the country go through what we in Clay county are trying to get out from under.

His wisdom on education has cost my daughters vastly needed improvements to their schools.

I think he should start a national campaign and do that for others as well!

I have the upmost respect for anyone that has served out country. I have respect for the freedoms we as Americans can enjoy thanks to these brave people. I do not have respect for anyone that takes away things from my children!

I meant this to be a blog atricle, but it didn't get posts by the Brazil Times. Can't really gripe about that, everyone deserves time off.

Memorial Day

As a former Marine, Memorial Day has a great deal of meaning to me. It is a time for me to reflect upon fallen comrades and comrades-at-arms who will be forever young in my mind. It is a time when I reflect on my father, a deceased veteran of the Army Medical Corps who served during World War II and Korea. It is a time when those in our military are on my mind and in my prayers.

Many of us have plans for family outings, picnics, and other activities. I see it as right and fitting to do those things on Memorial Day. The people who this day commemorates made their sacrifice for those things to go on and gave up enjoying those things for themselves.

I ask that in your busy day that you hug your family for those that can no longer hug theirs. Remember those that have passed the Great Veil and hold precious the freedoms that they preserved for you. Exercise those freedoms as often as you can for those who paid the ultimate price for them and who are now stiff and cold. Take a moment in the rain or sun, in the brightness of the day or in the dark of the night, and say a prayer for those who stand watch over those freedoms today.
