Double'n Bayh support!

Posted Sunday, October 5, 2008, at 3:46 PM

It looks like the Wabash Valley is going to get a second [or officially is it the first?] Bayh to come support Barack Obama as presidential candidate. Former Senator, Birch Bayh, is traveling through the state giving voters his reasons for supporting Obama. Rumor has it that we may get to see him both in Terre Haute and right here in Brazil!

Now that McCain has announced that he is suspending his campaign in Michigan, I guess that means we are going to hear and see a lot more of those campaign ads here in Indiana, one of the "Battleground" states for the upcoming election. Though I already know some of those TV ads by heart and truthfully am not looking forward to even more of them, I have enjoyed, and am looking forward to, all of the personal attention our state is getting and the opportunity to hear some of the great statesmen of our time in person.

Though I am not a native Hoosier, the "other" Senator Bayh is well known outside of Indiana's boundaries for multiple reasons. As one who has four daughters, one of his most important work in my mind is his work on the title 9 portion of the higher education act that assures that women get equal opportunities, both academically, and with regard to sports in public schools. He has also chaired the committee that developed the 26th amendment to the constitution which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, giving those who were old enough to be called to serve their country in war could also have the right to vote for the government officials who could put them on that battlefield.

While movie actors and rock stars provide support through their celebrity and entertainment for their candidate, getting to see and hear those who have been involved in the shaping of our government and our country's progress in areas of education and civil rights really gives me goose bumps. When someone like Former Senator Bayh, states that Obama is the right one to lead our country for the next four years, that makes one really sit up and take notice, no matter about what issues one feels passionate and which candidate one supports.

Chelsea Clinton has been to Brazil, Ind., and now Birch Bayh? Who is next I wonder?

Jimmy Carter will be next. Joy, joy. Then after that Chris Matthews. He gets goose bumps too.

Jenny- Great blog. I was there at the Double N when Birch Bayh stopped in, what a treat to get to meet such a wonderfully knowledgeable man. It's hard to believe that Mr. Bayh is 80 years old; I'm about half that age and I wish I was half as sharp as he is. His stories were great to hear and his message was inspirational. I wish his visit had taken place on a weekend so I could have taken my children to meet him.

Keep up the great work on your blog, I don't always agree with what you write/say, but you do it very well.
