The first ATMPosted Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at 2:51 PM
Did you that on this day in history, in 1985 a joint deep-sea expedition by the United States and France located the Titanic wreckage, in 1666, a great fire that started in a bakery shop engulfed London and destroyed St. Paul's Cathedral, and in 1969, Chemical Bank in Rockville Center, New York, used the very first ATM machine.
This is probably going to sound a little crazy, but I couldn't imagine people not having credit/debit cards to do their business. I can guarantee that I never have cash on me. Plastic takes up less space and in my opinion, it is faster to swipe my card then count out bills to hand to a cashier. When I think about how far technology has come in a few short years, and how dependent we as a society are on said technology, I become a little frightened. The idea of going without the Internet would destroy my brother if he couldn't be online battling evildoers and saving the world. If my sister didn't have her cell phone attached to her head at all times, I think she would have a break down, and as much as I love my sister I don't think she could live without it. What if something would happen and humanity is ever put into a position that survival of the fittest won't just be a thought, but a reality. Could we really do it? Could humans really survive without our basic comforts? Hopefully we will never know. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Oh how I love my internet and know for certain I couldn't live without it. It is a scary thing to ponder on regarding the advances of technology and the path of the future. Maybe just some day we'll live a world like the Jetson's. What fun that would be. Great blog Kimberly!
As you know I live in West Virginia in a very rural area. Where I live we still do not have cable, although I have a satellite. We had an outside antenna until about 15 years ago, and that antenna only picked up one channel, NBC out of Bluefield, WV. Now that we get all these channels with our satellite, I can't imagine how my children would react being without all those channels. They are 11 and have always had them. They would just be so unhappy without all those channels. I remember growing up with only the one channel and actually it didn't bother me much. Of course, I would've love to get other channels, but I guess I was used to it. Like I've said before, I love reading your blogs. Just wanted to comment a little about something that I did without most of my life that most people have had for years. Thanks!
