snow day!Posted Monday, December 1, 2008, at 11:18 AM
I love a good snowfall. To look outside my kitchen window and see a winter wonderland brings a smile to my face. Having a cup of hot chocolate and cuddling in a comfy chair with a good book is how I like to spend my snow days.
However, we don't always get what we want, and on this particular snow day I had to work. So I set about the chore of cleaning my car off, which is not so much fun when I had to wear my boyfriend's gloves, which are two sizes bigger because mine are MIA, as well as play the obstacle course of getting out of my driveway. I could've gone without the drive to work … my usual twenty-minute relaxing drive turned into a nerve racking thirty-to thirty-five minute drive where I am reminding myself to breathe and hoping that the truck behind me has good brakes all while trying to maneuver on the wet snow-covered highway. Once I was at work I breathed a sigh of relief, I made it and I survived … now as I sit here writing this blog, I am mentally preparing myself for the drive home. Hopefully the wetness won't turn to ice, and the people on the road have good brakes … please just let them have good brakes! Isn't it funny how all of or part of your winter attire goes MIA over the summer. I suspect that there is a warm sunny place where the MIA articles are laying on a beach getting a tan. They have obviously decided that cold and wet is not for them...........LOL!
If the wetness did turn to ice the brakes you speak of,whether good or bad, will be more of an enemy than an asset. This is because most people do not have an idea how to use their brakes. Have you ever followed someone driving on icy and/or slick roads and watch them "hit the ditch"? Their brake lights never go off until they leave the vehicle. When on icy roads the worst you can do is hit your brakes and never let off. Even with ABS your wheels lock-up and you loose control. Tapping your brakes to slow down will allow you to slow down and maintain control. Of course you have to be driving "smart" in the 1st place..
LOL.....had to go to Terre Haute Monday, Dec 1. All was fine on the trip over there at about 3 PM. I went 59 to I70 then to US31. I came back to the Wal-Mart on IN46 at about 5 and left at 5:45. I was driving my pick-up. 46 to US40 was black ice and 40 was black ice all the way back to Brazil. It was scary.......lol, observed five cars in the ditch or median. 20-25 MPH with lots of room between vehicles for stopping distance. I took almost an hour to go about 18 miles, but I made without any dents or running off the road.
I HAVE TO AGREE I LOVE THE LOOK OF SNOW BUT NOT THE DANGERS WHILE DRIVING........
I would rather drive in snow in Indiana than driving here on these curvy roads and steep mountains. Although when there is ice I will just stay away from any vehicle, no matter where I'm at.
