An Old Friend

Early last week, I received some news that one of my good friends from college was coming to visit me. Anna and I were introduced through a mutual friend, even though she was a senior and I was a sophmore we became fast friends.

We did the typical girl things: shopping for clothes, purses and shoes. If it was on sale, we were there! We also spent a lot of time gossiping. She would help me recover from whatever breakup I was going through, and I would console her after her latest guy ripped out her heart.

Anna would invite all of her friends over to her house on a Friday night for a home cooked dinner. My favorite was lasagna. She always made fresh garlic bread and I cut up the vegetables for the salad. It was the best part about the end of the week.

When she received her first rejection letter from law school, I called all of our friends and we proceeded to burn the letter and party all night long just to prove to her that she wouldn't fit in there anyway. When she was accepted to her second choice in Rhode Island, we threw another party but we didn't stay up all night long.

Anna and I played horrible jokes on her roommate, that to this day, I will never tell a soul but some of them were gross.

When my roommates decided that school wasn't important but illegal things were, Anna and Kayla allowed me to move in with them and I was responsible for cleaning to uphold my end of the rent.

After she graduated, a large group of us traveled from Terre Haute, met another group that was traveling from Indianapolis and we crashed the party her family was throwing for her.

When she told me she was making a stop in Terre Haute, I was ecstatic. It was the first time I had seen her in three years. Don't get me wrong we still called and talked to each other or sent e-mails. But it is different when you don't get to sit across the table from someone.

For hours, we gossiped and laughed. We joked about old friends and things we use to do. We made plans for the fall, her old roommate is getting married, and we were both invited.

Eventually, we got around to talking about our lives currently. After another few hours of discussion we both agreed, "if I would've known then, what I know now, I wouldn't have done it completely different, I would've planned better."

It's amazing how much time has passed, as I talked to my friend I realized that over the course of the years my friend changed, and so did I.

Before she left Anna gave me a hug.

"You've grown up so much, you've learned so much," she said. "You're going to do great with your second round of school, good luck."

Sometimes it takes an old friend to tell you that everything is going to be OK, for you to believe it.

And also believe this Kimberly, you are going to make the Dean's list. We both know that!
