I think some are sicker than others

Posted Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at 2:14 PM

Last night, I had the opportunity to watch the nightly news. It is usually something that Ryan and I forgo. After spending all day reading about the happenings of the world, the last thing I want to do is sit down to watch it before I go to bed. But we couldn't find the remote to change the channel and we were both to tired to get up, besides we really just needed the mind numbing noise to help us relax.

While we were lying in bed, a story came on about two people being arrested on charges of molesting children, one of the victims is apparently their 2-month-old baby. My boyfriend was immediately confused and angry.

"How could someone do that to a child," he said, "that's just sick."

While my boyfriend continued on his tyrant about the failings of people in society, I continued to listen to the newscast.

When the woman on TV was done speaking and moved on to another topic, I got up and turned off the TV. My boyfriend was finishing his speech and I sat back down on the bed, I then began to explain to my boyfriend why I could never become a lawyer.

While I was attending Indiana State University, I came to the brilliant idea that I wanted to be a lawyer. I took on a second major, did a double internship and graduated on time. I took a lot of Criminology classes. I studied with some amazing professors and I felt comfortable in my choice after college. I wanted to take on the world and I believed that if I used a large enough band-aid, I could fix anything.

Then one day during my internship, I sat in court taking my notes and listening to the proceeds of the court. I had sat across from murderers, rapists, and gang members. I listened to how they committed their crime and why they did it. It never affected me until I listened to a convicted child molester talk about his crimes. I will save you from the details, but I will admit that even the judge looked queasy.

When I went back to the office and talked to my supervisor, she told me that molestation is a sad fact in society. She told me that I would either have to learn to deal with them, especially if I wanted to become a lawyer or I should rethink my chosen profession.

I won't deny that there are sick people in society, I studied them and learned about them. However, I think some are sicker than others.

It is a proven fact that the one crime that has the lowest rehabilitation rate and the highest recidivism rate is Child Molesting. The rate of rehabilitation is 3% and included in that rate is the fact that some of the offenders in that simply disappeared and were unaccounted for. That means that 97% re-offend and several times over.

What confuses me is that in prison, they have to keep child molesters segregated from the general population in order to "protect" them from other inmates who "Will indeed kill them for their crimes". Hmmmm.....

I am not a proponent of murder, but as a Mother, Sister, Aunt and Daughter, I just cannot justify the senseless hurting of the defenseless one's in our society. However, in this case....maybe I am.

Great Blog Kimberly, just a sad topic that unfortunately is in our society.

Karen hit the nail on the head, when a person's crime is so heinous that the dregs of society cannot stand them, the crime is heinous indeed.

Crimes against children should have dire consequences but since the crime also contains a certain amount of "grooming" by the molester, the mental damage many times goes far beyond the physical and much harder to heal from. SO important to be proactive and talk to all children about "bad secrets" and so important for caregivers to rely more on gut feelings of something not being right and not ignore subtle signs of abuse as those victims many times because of the mental damage turn into abusers as well to rid themselves of feelings of powerlessness they continue to feel for years afterward. The results of one molester can multiply like a Ponzi scheme.

If child molestors didn't like having it done to them, why do they continue to do it to others?

Too bad if they are in prison and the others want to kill them. Personally, I feel that they deserve to be strung up till they rot, and I don't mean strung up by the thumbs. And women child molestors are just as heinous.

foxcollector: Many times due to the emotional damage they still have from being molested. It's about being in a situation where they are now able to have control. Not giving an excuse. Just what I've read.
