Burns My Buttons

I'm the type of person that just sort of lets things roll off my shoulders. I try not to get angry or upset, the only thing that accomplishes is raising my blood pressure. I always take a step back and try to look at a particular situation from a different perspective. I understand there are things in this world I am not going to know about, it's OK, I am perfectly happy not knowing if there is some life form on other planets. It doesn't keep me awake at night.

However there is something that really burns my buttons, the recent reports on how the financial institutions are spending their bailout money, you know the bonuses. I must admit while reading stories and catching a glimpse of the news, my temper has reached skyrocketing levels.

American International Group gave $165 million in bonuses to its senior employees, after the latest taxpayer bailout money. Seventy-three of the bonuses topped $1 million. Rumor has it, Citigroup is planning to do this as well! Now I understand I graduated with an English degree and I still have problems balancing my checkbook, and even doing basic math, but even I know that is a lot of money that isn't really going to help the banks, but really just going into the pockets of people that don't need it.

What I don't understand is how can these people do this. Granted, I just graduated, I am in student loan debt up to my eyeballs and I'm not going to lie, making payments is hard when you are living on a very limited income, but hey, I understand, I'm still young and I have the rest of my life to make money. I also realize how lucky I am to have my job, a lot of my friends don't and they are in a more difficult situation than I am.

So why, if recent reports are showing such a loss in jobs across the country, are banks not realizing that people are going to be angry when these reports hit the newsstands? Why are my tax dollars going to bailout the banks when they obviously don't really need the money if people are still getting huge bonuses for running them into the ground?

My challenge to the banking industry, try living off of $8-an-hour, taking care a family of four, keeping a roof over your head and food on the table, not to mention the other expenses that occur. Then maybe you will understand why everyone is up in arms.

Well this is going to make you even madder Kim! If you read the PASSED bailout bill (yes, all 2400 pages of it!) you will see clearly there was listed a moratorium on the bonuses for AIG execs! Oh yeah! Who do you think was so kind as to allow that bonus to go on through?!!! Well none other than Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank! Yep! Their initials are right beside it!

This whole sham the Democrats and even (ugh forbid!) our new Prez is playing out for the public is made even sicker by the knowledge that this is common knowledge!

I couldn't agree with you more Kim but how much louder does our new Congress and President need to laugh for the "public" to get it already? Oh well, George Bush was no peach himself.
