I converted my sister!!

Posted Monday, September 21, 2009, at 2:31 PM

I'm cheap ... OK, what I meant to say is, I don't like to spend a lot of money. I'm sure I'm not alone in this, considering the current status of the economy. I've noticed many people walking through the aisles at local retail establishments comparing prices and trying to get the biggest bang for their buck.

I would like to share a story that happened about two weeks ago, but I am still finding humor in it. My sister and I drove to Crawfordsville, she was having problems with her car and didn't want to make the drive to get it fixed alone. I agreed to accompany her, after all, I would never turn down the opportunity to visit with my grandmother and catch up on the latest gossip.

After having no luck getting a copy of the Sunday edition of the Indianapolis Star in Terre Haute, I had my mind set to get a copy in Crawfordsville. After the drive there and grabbing a quick lunch, I was on the hunt. My sister, who spent the majority of the time laughing at me, couldn't understand why I was so obsessed.

After three different stores and four gas stations, I finally found a copy of the paper and my coupons! While sitting on my grandmother's porch, Samantha continued to laugh at me, but eventually, she began to shuffle through the coupons with me.

That evening, we stopped at a local retail establishment so my sister could buy groceries and a few other necessities that she couldn't live without. While walking down the aisles, she began to pick out items that I knew I had coupons for.

She only saved $5-$10, but it was enough to get her hooked!

"That's a lot of money to save when you have none," she said.

All afternoon Samantha made fun of me and laughed, but can you believe my sister is now a firm coupon believer. I guess even she likes to save money!!

LOL, we use coupons constantly, even when we shop at the military commissaries where grocery prices are about 30% less. Why would anyone pay more than the lowest price for the same item when you can save money with a pair of scissors and a little time? Of course, my wife does most of this, me, I just grab and go. She hands me a coupon and I play "seek and go find........LOL.

What I usually do is reduce anything that I am about to purchase to work hours. That helps me to put it into perspective if it is a need, or a want.

Lets say, I make $20. an hour, and what I am considering is $160. Is it worth my entire work day of sweat equity. NO, then I don't buy it. Now my wife is a different story. She will say, is it worth my husbands work day, HECK Yeah. We have a nicely decorated home. I don't complain.
