Being sick on your birthday sucks

Posted Monday, October 19, 2009, at 3:16 PM

I was so excited last week. My dad was coming to visit to celebrate my birthday. I was going to spend all day Saturday with my dad, stepmom and brother as well as my sister and her boyfriend. Though I wasn't excited about the traffic, I was OK with traveling to Mansfield. I just wanted to see my family. Then I woke up Friday morning and those plans changed.

I have asthma, I usually only have an attack when I'm swimming or running, sometimes dust can cause it to aggravate but it has never been anything I couldn't handle.

However, I experienced one of those attacks that I couldn't handle, and I'm pretty happy Ryan was home to help take care of me. Needless to say I missed work Friday, and by Saturday I had a full out cold with a cough. I wasn't going to the covered bridge festival, I was barely walking around my house.

My family did come to visit. I received a new wallet from my stepsister and a new handbag to match from my father and stepmother, I guess they are a giraffe design? They are cool looking and I'm enjoying them, not to mention the cell phone holder is actually large enough for my cell phone.

My brother said the gift was also from him, but I don't really see him taking the time to pick out purses! I received hugs from all of them and then I was back on the futon with my three pillows, my green blanket, tissues and DayQuil.

In total, I drank two bottles of DayQuil, one bottle of NyQuil, used my inhaler, conquered the Mucinex bottle, went through four boxes of tissues and I am also a huge fan of chloraseptic spray and Halls cough drops. However, not once did I have a temperature nor did I bow down to the porcelain gods.

The person that decided to combine Puffs Plus Lotion Tissues with the scent of VICKS vapor rub deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. My only complaint is the taste of all the medicine.

So here it is, my birthday, I'm 25-years-old and instead of going out to party with my family and friends, I stayed at home with my tissues and cough medicine.

The entire weekend, I wanted two eggs over easy, hash browns with ketchup, all mixed together and a glass of chocolate milk, Ryan made scrambled eggs with bacon and he made me drink orange juice. Not what I wanted, but I love him anyway.

I still don't have much of a voice, so check your e-mail if you are expecting something from me. My nose is sore and the skin is peeling. I've decided I should be Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for Halloween.

The conclusion to my weekend is simple, being sick on your birthday really does suck.

Happy Birthday Kimberly! I know that it would be better if you weren't sick. Your dad and I are thinking about you today. It was so good to see you. Can't wait to see you again for Thanksgiving.

We miss you already. Love ya!
