A coal mining communityPosted Friday, April 9, 2010, at 9:19 PM
Sometimes it takes something nine hours away to put it into perspective.
Last September, Ryan and I took a trip to West Virginia. We visited my family there. My parents separated in 2008 and after a very tumultuous time they eventually divorced. It caused some problems for my siblings to not have the stability at home and my brother eventually dropped out of college. My father eventually remarried. Now, both my father and brother moved to West Virginia and they live with my stepmother and her family. I had so much fun when we went to West Virginia, while visiting the area we drove by a few coal mines. As you have probably heard in the media this week, coal mining is a huge industry in that area and it is something my brother is applying for jobs in. The explosion that took place is the next county over from where my family lives. Needless to say, it hit a little close to home. It is never easy when you loose a loved one, it is even harder when they are so young. Some of those boys that died or are still missing are my brother's age. I hope the miners still trapped are safe and they will be able to see their families again. I hope those that have lost their loved ones find some peace. I know there is a risk when a miner goes to work, but I hope the government does more to ensure the safety of those that are doing this for a living. David's taken all the courses and he promises he will be safe, but I still can't help but worry. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Clay County grew with the coal mines and of course, the farming. Many families earned a living working the mines. Although I have never done it, I understand it is incredibly hard work, and as we are all reminded, very dangerous. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this Kimberly. It's important we keep those miners and their families in our prayers.
As everyone probably knows by now, the missing miners were found. They didn't survive, but didn't suffer. I knew one of the miner's mother. Please keep her and all the families in your prayers. I have been around mining all my life, my grandfather was a coal miner as were a lot of people in my family. I have much respect for the coal miner. It is very hard work. Our community is in a very sad state right now. Hopefully the investigators will find out what happen and it will be able to prevent this from happening again. My step son is wanting to go into the mines. His dad and I and all of his family have tried to talk him out of doing this. I would rather he go to school. We have great colleges in the state of West Virginia. But David doesn't want to go to school, he wants to make money and I respect him for that. I just pray that God keeps him safe when he does get a job. That's all I can do, and of course everyday he goes in the mines I will be worried sick till he gets home.
