The worst thing at the worst time

Posted Monday, May 17, 2010, at 1:07 PM

For the first time since I have owned my computer, it isn't turned on.

Actually, it hasn't been on for a few days.

I have finally had the worst thing that could happen to a computer happen.

After six year of safety and security, my desktop now has a virus.

I've had hardware problems, a hard drive go out, a fan stop working, things like that. But I've never had a virus. I'm handling this freak out quite well, considering the last time something was wrong and I couldn't fix it, I almost drove nine hours to have my brother do it.

About a month ago, I bought an external hard drive. I have all of my pictures and music saved on it as well as my second hard drive in my desktop. And I've enjoyed not feeling the compelling need to check my e-mail and surf the web. It's very liberating.

I shouldn't complain. I haven't reformatted my computer in a while so now I don't have an excuse not to anymore. I just can't decide if it's what I really want. I've enjoyed having time for other things. I do admit, I miss listening to my music.

According to my brother, I'm taking this quite well. However, I do have a round of bills coming up. And they are all paid online.

I am now freaking out.

Kimberly,

No need to reformat! Update and run a good quality antivirus. I got Norton 360 for about $65 for three liscenses a while back. I love it. Its onestop shopping. It does anti virus, addware, malware, spyware and automatic back up. It doesn't drag down my boot up or operation either. you can stop freaking out now:)

I agree with Mike, no need to buy another computer (unless you just really want one). There are many quality security suites that cover it all (anti-virus, anti-spyware, backups, etc)they are generally reasonably priced and are available in many stores. You just need to choose the one you feel will do the best job for you (and meets your computer's system requirements).
