Politics as usualPosted Monday, June 14, 2010, at 5:26 PM
While visiting with family during the weekend, the conversation naturally went toward the direction of current events. The conversation that sparked some tempers to fly included the oil spill in the Gulf.
While listening to family members argue on both the conservative and liberal opinions, I couldn't help but sit there and think my own thoughts. Unlike those in my family, I believe everyone is to blame. However that is a topic for another day. My concern is for the animals that are just trying to live, the families that are watching their livelihoods go down the toilet and for the future of everyone. I was only four or five when the Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred. I'm not going to lie, if it didn't involve Barbie or Bambi (the Disney movie) then I wasn't interested. However, I know this oil spill is causing havoc and I know everyone is going to continue to point fingers and blame everyone else. But wouldn't it be easier to just work together to get everything cleaned up and play the blame game in the future. Call me a dreamer, but the biggest concern at the moment should be that. The other topic that pressed a few buttons was the arrest of Joran van der Sloot. Blame it on the Criminology Degree or the way I was raised but I am a firm believer in doing the crime and paying the time. In my opinion, you break the law then you pay your debt to society. That's how the system works. It isn't a perfect system in any country, everyone will always find problems with it, but it is the law. However, from what I remember of my classes, he should have an "interesting" time in prison. Who knows, maybe he will finally come to terms with the crimes he has committed and give the Holloway family the closure they deserve. |
