The PhotographPosted Sunday, November 23, 2008, at 6:11 PM
Over the past week that I was back at my parent's home, while going through my court issues, we decided to do our Thanksgiving while the family was altogether.
Saturday was such a festive day and the excitement flowed through the air. As the kids played around us, Grandma and I cooked and enjoyed a time of reflection that only adult children can have with their parent's. We swapped stories about the similarities in my children that brought back memories to her of things that my brother and I did when we were the same ages. We compared our differences in spices, healed old wounds and shooed away ghosts of a bad relationships past. This was the moment when all adult children realize that even though they are your parents, they are your best friends as well. I had somehow over the years managed to stop my parents aging at ages 35 and 42. It's weird that my real eyes ignored the wrinkles and gray hair that had spread over their faces and hair. (Except Dad, he has been graying since he was 17, as have I, thanks Dad! Laughing) they seemed timeless to me and I never took a moment to think about Mom and Dad actually getting to be "old people." Not, until this weekend. As we sat around the table and gave thanks, I looked at my husband and my children and then at the three parents seated there with us. I realized with a thud that my husband and I were now the 30- and 40-somethings and that our parents were the elderly ones. (Its as though my eyes became clear and the sense of responsibility became so great.) I knew the time had come for their time to be easier. It was time for them to relax and let us, the children, take care of them. They are far from incapacitated, but if they are someday, we will make sure they are never abused or mistreated. Their futures are our futures. I was reminded the Lord tells us to honor our parents and that is exactly what we are to do. Whether my days are long or short upon the land, their days will be comfortable with the security that no matter what happens, we will be there. The new photograph now hanging on these walls that I swore I would never put anything on, is of Mom and Dad in their "golden years." Thanks Mom and Dad, I have made mistakes all these years, but you, no you did everything right. I just had to wake up, grow up and live as you taught me.

A very Happy Thanksgiving to you all and I am so thankful to be here with you all for the big Christmas parade this weekend. My son is so excited about it! Just curious..when do you put up your Christmas trees and does the term X-mas offend you all?
Happy Turkey Day and this year, let's really give thanks to the Lord for I have a feeling, this next year is going to be really challenging for us all.
Sincerely,
Karen S. Meister
I'll be looking for you at the parade ~
Happy Thanksgiving to you & your family ~
X mas offends me. I think it makes you forget why we celebrate Christmas.
Happy Holidays to your family. I will look for you at the parade and introduce myself to you
What about the cookies & bonbons??????
Christmas is the proper word in our home ~ thanks for being considerate, Karen & asking !
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
I prefer to keep Christ in Christmas, but X-mas does not offend me, it reminds me that the birth of Jesus was but half of the gifts God gave us that day. The other half was given the day that Jesus died for our sins on the cross. The "X" in X-mas reminds me that Jesus died for us. While we understand that the cross that Jesus died upon was not in the form of an "X", that form was also used in crucifixions. It could have been used to crucify our Lord. However, given that, X-mas would be more a suitable term for Easter rather than Christmas.
X-mas is a skin-flint's way of saving time, ink, or money. I figure that a person or business that has a need to use X-mas instead of Christmas really doesn't need my association, they have probably benefited more from leaving Christ out of Christmas than I would have contributed to them anyway .LOL!
