When I say "Militia"...Posted Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at 11:03 AM
If I came to you and said the word militia what does that conjure up immediately in your mind? Is it men, women and adolescents in camouflage out in the woods shooting randomly at targets? How about that same group of people doing military exercises under the leadership of just one person? Does the word "compound" come to mind as well?
Is a militia even constitutional and exactly how does the Constitution define a militia? The 2nd Amendment states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Dr. Edwin Vieira, Ph.D., J.D., a renowned speaker and activist states: "The principle in operation was that the only truly free men are armed men, because an armed citizenry is necessary to maintain a free society. As the Second Amendment came to summarize the idea, "[a] well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." A "free State" is one with "[a] well regulated Militia"; and "[a] well regulated Militia" is one composed of all "the people" actually exercising their "right to keep and bear Arms", with no "infringe[ment]" by public officials. Arms in every citizen's personal possession are the precondition for freedom, freedom the hoped-for consequence of such possession (if the Militia do their part). And public officials can do nothing to interfere with such possession, being limited in their authority to ensure that, through and in the Militia, everyone obtains and maintains private possession of firearms suitable for defending individual liberty and social order. Hearing this, tell me what YOU think a militia is and how it could be harmful or beneficial to us as a Country, State, Town or Neighborhood. This is merely an opinion piece. Thank You for your reply Tim. I am glad that we agree on the "private militia".
LOL....BackHomeAgain
One the one hand, you have the militia that I belong to, the organized and un-organized citizens who will stand to for the protection of this nation and the concepts on which it was founded, even if I have to crawl to the coast to repel an invasion with my own rifle and ammo, and then you have those groups that use the word militia in an effort to justify their actions to enforce their will on the citizens of this nation and are one of the enemies that this nation must be protected FROM!!!
When I hear "Militia" I also think of McVeigh and Nichols, Oklahoma City bombing and innocent people dead.
Militias too often tend to attract like minded individuals who are obsessed with self perceived problems. The New World Order, the secret agenda of the United Nations to rule the world, The Communist/Muslim/anyone who does not think or look like us plan to take over our country. The CIA/FBI plan to run the Government behind the scenes.
Want to see paranoia in action? Read the response from Tim... I Quote...
"in order to not draw the "wrong kind of attention."
What attention would that be?????
Militias and Paramilitary groups scare the H*** out of me. The can be a very dangerous problem when they try to "Save our Country from the **** menace"
LOL.....sassypants...understandable! Depends on who is using the word and if they are talking about the actual militia of the United States or their own little group bent on forcing their ideas on the rest of us........LOL!
I tend to fall the other way when the word MALITIA is spoken. I think of Branch Davidian and Timothy McVey. They have given those words spine chilling effects to me!
Militia, while there are organizations that include that word in their name and go in many directions, are, under the laws of this nation -- "We, the people!"
If you care to research the laws of this nation, you will find that the United States actually has no "standing" army, it is forbidden by law from having one. That the U.S. Army has been in continuous existence for well over a century is by the grace of Congress for continually funding its operation and allowing it to continue to exist on an annual basis. If Congress does not fund the Army or any of the Armed Forces) and pass a bill every year to maintain its existence, by law, it ceases to exist. The Department of the Army (likewise the Navy and Air Force) would still exist, yet the Armed Forces themselves dissolve. (USC Title 10, Subtitle A, Part 1, Chapter 2 (DoD), Section. 114)
TITLE 10--ARMED FORCES
Subtitle A--General Military Law
PART I--ORGANIZATION AND GENERAL MILITARY POWERS
CHAPTER 13--THE MILITIA
Sec. 311. Militia: composition and classes
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied
males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of
title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration
of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female
citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are--
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard
and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of
the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval
Militia.
(Aug. 10, 1956, ch. 1041, 70A Stat. 14; Pub. L. 85-861, Sec. 1(7), Sept.
2, 1958, 72 Stat. 1439; Pub. L. 103-160, div. A, title V, Sec. 524(a),
Nov. 30, 1993, 107 Stat. 1656.)
The actual wording of USC 10, Subtitle A, Part 1, Chapter 13, Sec.311, notwithstanding due to prejudice relating to gender, this means that everyone able-bodied between the ages of 17 and 45 is the un-organized militia of the United States, subject to call in time of crisis. While excluded, in times of crisis that would call for the activation of the un-organized militia, everyone, young, old, sick, lame, lazy, and crazy, that cares about this nation will be fighting!
A milita is you, and whatever weapon you feel you will need to defend you, and your family with. Right now, in this time, we maybe able to defend ourselves with a hand gun. But some day, we might need a long rifle, or a shot gun. But still at that, the core of any milita, is the guts to be able to use them within the confines and structures of the laws. The people that believe in the 2nd ammendment, have those guts. Hopefully, they also know the laws as well. A gun in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it, is useless. But mainly, the person has to have the courage to use it, even in the face of death, as our fore fathers did.
I think of militia as the people who helped forge this country. I think of men defending their homes cut out of the wilderness and then called to help defend a new and fledgeling nation.
I believe that today's national guardsmen still think of themselves as militia.
