Slow down in work zones

Posted Friday, April 2, 2010, at 2:38 PM

As another state-sponsored construction project starts in Clay City, the public needs to be aware of the transportation engineers, road crews and all the other workers in the area with work zone signs, neon-color vests, hazard lights and other work equipment.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced 9th Street would be closed immediately between the intersection of State Roads 59 and 246 to its junction with State Road 57.

The street will be closed in order for improvements to be made, including the placing of new curbs, gutters, improvements to drainage and sidewalks in addition to the removing of a curve at State Road 157 and 9th Street. Traffic will be rerouted to Nye Street in town until the expected reopening in June.

The Clay City Police Department wants motorists to SLOW DOWN WHEN YOU ARE IN A WORK ZONE. Patrols will be stepped up during construction times and speeding will be strongly enforced. Also, be aware that speeding fines are doubled if a motorist is ticketed while traveling through a work zone.

Driving through a work zone is not the time to be talking on the phone, texting, speeding or participating in any activity that diverts your attention from driving responsibly.

It's spring, and this is also the time of year when everyone gets out to enjoy the nice weather. So please be more aware of the children, runners, bicyclists and motorcycles and all of the things and creatures that this time of the year brings out.

The warm weather brings new life, with all the plants and trees starting to grow. This can create blind spots that can obscure your vision at intersections and driveways.

Spring also a time for cleaning.

Now that the weather is more permitting, we will also be working on the junk vehicles located in city limits.

With numerous complaints of animals running at large, we will also be working these reports as well.
