Things I have learned by having kids

Posted Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 6:22 AM

I am stay-at-home mom of three boys. I love what I do but I have definately learned

a few things throughout this process. Here's a few things I have learned.

Kids learn by doing, no matter how many times you tell them how the outcome will

be, they learn by doing. When my oldest wanted to know what happened if you throw

a bag of popcorn in our fireplace I told him. Now even though I told him, he had to do it

for himself and our house smelled like burnt popcorn for hours (luckily not days).

I have learned that no matter how many times you explain to toddlers what a toilet

is for they never believe you. Mine seems to thinks its either a water toy or he thinks

it leads to the ocean. In my house everthing must be out of reach because if not

my two year old sends it to the ocean.Whether it be keys, toys, food, just about

anything that will fit in there.

Speaking of toilets, I now know the trick they tell parents to use, the one about

putting cheerios in the toilet to teach your little one (boy) to potty train is very ineffective

and downright gross. Now some parents may have luck with it but i did not. While i was

explaining the trick to him about aiming at the cheerios I turned around to talk to one

of my other boys and my two year old preceded to eat the cheerios i just placed in the

toilet. Appaarently feeding the fish in the ocean didnt apply this one time in his mind.

I have also learned that finger painting is great. I sit all the time and finger paint with my

kids but as many know washable finger paint is not always washable. I was cleaning up

my two year old and his play date and while I went to rinse out the rag they scurried and

dumped three bottles on the carpet. (my fault for leaving the bottles there) but needless to

say, it doesnt come out of carpet, regardless of all the carpet cleaning tricks i know.

They had so much fun though that a little carpet discoloration was no big deal and neither was paint finger prints or head to toe scrubbing. Point of me saying this is boys thrive on messes and for me to see them so happy was a great highlight of my day.

I have learned that as an adult I may not see the humor in what my boys do sometimes but when i stop and look at it through their eyes, I understand why they do silly things and i just sit back and enjoy the ride (while looking through their eyes). I now do things that other adults find silly or funny (and yes i look rediculous or nuts) but i understand their world a little better.

I LOVE your Blog! I am the mother to 5 year old twin boys. I found great amusement and understanding to your blog. Potty training boys is a LONG and frustrating milestone to undertake as a mother and as a little boy. They'll learn on their own schedule and determination. Just be thankful you don't have a boy that finds having a BM in the driveway everyday as his preferred method of potty training. It was like having a dog. A summer of that and then one day he decided indoor plumbing was the way to go.

Now that they are in Kindergarten and gone nearly seven hours a day I miss them making messes and pottying in the driveway. Cherish these moments and continue to share and relive their moments with others.

Kids, may God bless them all, should come with instructions and warning labels. Well, maybe not, the instruction manual would take up a couple of city blocks and the warning labels would gridlock the state but not cover everything you NEED to know. Parenting is strictly a function that can only be learned on the job and is mostly taught by the child……..lol! What works with one of your children only has a fifty-fifty chance of working with another…..lol. We all learn as we go.

I was talking to a friend one day when his son "taught" him not to ignore his children. The little boy was about three. "Daddy" was talking to me and a couple of other guys when his son wanted to show him something. After about five minutes of attempting to get Daddy's attention, the boy got Daddy's full, undivided, attention by bringing Daddy down to eye level with a punch where it hurt Daddy most. Believe me, Daddy learned and I did too!

Child-proof and child-resistant only means that an adult has a hard time with it. If it will fit in the mouth, it will go there, that goes for the ears and nose too………….lol! If it is permanent, it will be conspicuous and nothing "washable, unbreakable, or harmless" ever is, absolutely. Try getting Floam or Play dough out of a child's ear……………….lol. I own a car that had the interior painted with fingernail polish -- from a bottle that was left in it because an adult could not get the bottle open……….lol. Seems that it wasn't a problem for a toddler……..lol!

Enjoy your children, they grow up……and take pictures to show at their weddings. Who knows, your grandchildren may try the same things, but I'll bet they will also spring some surprises on their parents and grandparents.

Well, I can tell you this, I am NOT using the cheerio trick for potty training my little guy for sure now!! LOL!! If I saw him eat them out of the toilet, I would surely vomit. How did you not?!!! LOL. I LOOOOOOOVED this Blog and look forward to more in the future! I am now grateful to only have one 2 yr.old boy , however, does anyone know how to explain to him that our cats are not his siblings and that they don't like baths nearly as much as he does? Lol. Have a great day all.
