Bigger picture

Posted Monday, February 23, 2009, at 6:53 PM

We a a society have always been bombarded by commercials about kids in other countries who are starving and need our money.

Now, don't get me wrong, but I would like everyone to stop and think about all the people in the United States that are starving and have basic needs that are not being met.

Yes, some people chose to be homeless, but others don't and yet they still are. Everyone seems to be so quick to blame everything on the economy.

Some things have gotten worse since the economy, but my opinion is, that is just an excuse for people to sit idly by and watch the world get worse.

In my opinion, drug rates are up because too many people are getting by with blaming the economy. Instead, they say that is their escape from what is going on in their life. Well, if you need an escape from your life that bad, then read a book or better yet, do something to change the circumstances you are in.

I am not perfect and I like everyone else, has had bad things happen in my life, but I chose to take control and make life what I want it to be.

How many people have actually thought about all the starving men, women and children in the United States? How many people have read about the poor who live in the Appalachian Mountains? That is one of the poorest parts of our country and yet, no one really tries to help.

They live in conditions that are like those of third world countries, yet no one famous is doing things to help them.

Why is that?

Our country is headed for trouble and yet, people want to give outside of our country or blame everything on the economy and then do nothing. I am sorry, but please, look at the bigger picture.

To me, most our money is going outside the country as is. Most everything that Americans buy are not even made in this country.

Go to any store and read the labels and see where it is made. Yet, so many politicians wonder why America is not thriving.Everything from food to clothes and beyond, is made outside our country and brought here for American companies to sell.

The people that make the products we buy only get paid a few cents a day, probably less than a quarter a day the last time I read.

Now, I know we depend on things from outside the country as well. I just don't understand what has taken our governor so long to realize this and to do something to make our world self sufficient.

There is talk about making it this way but when will it happen?

Why doesn't everyone stop and think the next time they see firemen collecting money for a good cause or next time they see a homeless person and instead of hiding or avoiding them, give a few cents of whatever you can afford.

If you are afraid to give directly to the homeless, then give to a shelter.

One way to help our own people is to give locally. I am all for helping in your county or community, but I am also for helping the country.

When you see that you have accidentally gotten something at the grocery store you don't like or you have too many vegetables from your garden crop, then give to the local food bank.

I am sure they would be happy to receive your gift.

No matter what you are going through, there is always someone who has it worse. What I am trying to say is not only help your city, county and community, but also help our country.

Now is time for Americans to take a stand and help each other out.

Give to fellow Americans in need. Think of the bigger picture.

Thank you Nicole. Well said. We might not be able to help over seas but we can help in our own back yard.

Point well made, Nichole! Now if you could only get the Federal Government to understand, perhaps keeping more of our money at home and spending it on the needs of the people here rather than everywhere else America would be better off.
