A Matter of Laugh or Death: The Benefits of Humor
Posted Tuesday, November 3, at 1:28 PM
Discover the benefits of Laughter for the spirit, mind and body.

Question: What do you call a boomerang that doesn't come back? Answer: A stick!

Laughter does much more than tickle your funny bone. Assuming you found some humor in this joke, here's what happened in your body - just because you laughed.

Your heart was exercised as your heart rate and blood pressure increased, then relaxed. This improved your circulation. Your eyes cleansed themselves. Your body released chemicals to help reduce inflammation in your body. Your intake of oxygen-rich air was enhanced since you inhaled and exhaled more forcefully. (This is the opposite of the breathing pattern associated with tension.) And, the stomach muscles you used to laugh massaged your internal organs, improving your digestion.

In your immune and endocrine systems, there was an increase in the number and activity of cells which strengthen your body's natural ability to fight off illness and disease (including some types of cancer). And, there was a decrease in the amount of stress hormones which constrict blood vessels and suppress the immune system. Laughter also released some of your body's natural pain killers (adrenaline, endorphins and enkephalins) which increased your feeling of overall well-being.

Much of this information is from research being conducted in a new field of science called psychoneuroimmunology or PNI - the study of how behavior, the nervous system and the immune system are interrelated. Or, how we think can affect how we feel. This being the case, many doctors are considering adding mirthful laughter to their repertoire of preventative and therapeutic medical strategies.

In addition to all its physical benefits, laughter also benefits us psychologically and socially:

*Cracking a joke or laughing at daily absurdities can help you gain control. Through humor, you can step back from a difficult situation and look at it from another perspective. Problems are easier to solve once you take them more lightly,
*If you want someone to learn quickly, intersperse humor in your discussion. Laughter enhances memory, learning, alertness, and creative thinking by stimulating a chemical called catecholamine,
*Laughter can be a great release for nervous tension. In emergency situations, laughter has even been found to help people gain greater objectivity, maintain positive perspectives, and increase morale,
*Situationally relevant humor helps people feel close to one another. It helps establish rapport and neutralizes emotionally charged situations, and
*Humor promotes self-acceptance and a positive self-image and decreases the negative effects of stress, tension, anxiety and depression.

Are you inspired now to have more laughter in your day? Here are some ideas and activities you can do to strengthen your sense of humor:

*Keep a humor journal. When you see or hear something funny, write it down. Then read your humor journal when you need a smile,
*Collect and share funny cartoons, cards and bumper stickers. Create a humor scrapbook.
*Watch funny movies and videotapes,
*Play silly games,
*Once a day (at least), share your favorite cartoon, joke or anecdote with friends and co-workers - and have them pass it on to someone else,
*Put humor into your physical environment using pictures, posters, or funny banners,
*Develop your comic vision. Look for humor and humor will find you,
*Learn to laugh at yourself. This is one of the best ways to reduce stress,
*Caption a picture, cartoon or comic strip. White out what the cartoonist has written and put in your own caption,
*Put up a humor bulletin board at work or at home and have humor contests. Put up blank cartoons and invite others to write in the captions,
*Start your own collection of humorous books, audio and videotapes,
*Collect humor props, like "moo" cans, clown noses, wind-up toys, bath tub toys, etc., and
*Listen to funny songs - then sing them out loud.

Humor, of course, is not a total panacea. In some situations it's completely inappropriate. Nor should humor be used to avoid reality or negative emotional states. Rather, it should be used to provide relief from life's seriousness and challenges. And, it could be a matter of laugh or death.

Soooo ... now that you know the benefits of humor, can you define frustration? Answer: Buying a new boomerang and finding it impossible to throw the old one away . . .

Fitness + Technology = Fun!

YMCA's and several other nonprofit organizations across the country offer many of the same services including traditional sport programs for youth. This used to be ideal. But is this true today? This population of children, adolescents and emerging adults is much different than it was years ago. Both youth and adults are less active, more overweight, and seemingly consumed with modern technology...
