Ding! Dong! The witch is dead! The wicked, wicked, witch is dead!!!
It's a good thing that I am not President of the United States. My first thought was that Mr. Bin Laden's head should be stuck on a pike and placed on the White House front lawn and the rest of his corpse buried in a pit with pig entrails. Later, I heard a suggestion that his head should be put on a pike and displayed at Ground Zero. I like that better.
The deeply indignant American in me who clearly remembers Sept. 11, blended with my Italian heritage, lends itself to the idea of screw with us and we'll screw with you harder.
I stayed up Sunday night to listen to the President's address to the nation. My first impression was that I was less than impressed. However, my wife reminded me that the intended audience was more than Americans. Good point. It doesn't hurt to remind everyone that we have a right, written in spilled innocent American blood, to exact retribution no matter who may be offended by a trespass to do it.
I have now had a bit more than a day to listen to all kinds of opinions on these events. Again, it is a good thing that I am not President.
While I see no need to worry about Muslim burial ideas (screw with us and we may harm your soul as well as take your life), but the idea of dumping the corpse in the sea was a good idea. Yasser Arafat's tomb is a pilgrimage destination. We don't need that with Bin Laden.
While I believe that the pictures of the body need to be shown, I have no doubt that we got him. Even if you don't trust the President, you can fully trust the soldiers who did it and the objections of Pakistan to the raid puts the golden seal on the truth of it.
Kudos to President Obama! All of the Monday morning quarterbacking doesn't change the fact that Bin Laden is dead and President Obama gave the "go ahead." No matter how dreadful the President is in other areas, on this, he did right. Even a lousy golfer will occasionally get a birdie. This was a hole in one (or, if you prefer, two holes in one)!
I'm glad Bin Laden is dead and I have no intent of complaining about any detail. In my opinion, those who approve of Bin Laden's death but want to complain about the details are missing the point. We sent in our best and brightest and they implemented the just and holy retribution of the United States. Ooh Rah!!!
I can't help but close with this thought: I hope that Osama Bin Laden is one of the 72 virgins for some other Islamic martyr in the lowest plane of Hell. Al-Zawahiri, you better duck and cover, with any luck, you will soon be next!
