Enjoying my Youth

Every Thanksgiving my family heads to Center Point to my great aunt's house for food and fellowship. I think we had around 60 people there this year. It was pretty crowded! All the ladies bring in their food -- vegetable trays, pies, salads and casseroles. All the men walk in and head to the living room to chat or watch the football game. All the kids run in to play with the toy tractors.

I always stick by my cousins, Aubree and Morgan. I think of them as sisters. As the three of us stood around chatting while we waited for the food, we talked about how someday we'd be the ones slaving away in the kitchen. Someday, we'll be the moms and aunts. Someday we'll even be grandmas! At this point in our lives, it was hard for us to comprehend.

But whether we can imagine it or not, time never stops and someday that day will come. So we enjoyed standing around, playing with the cute kids and talking about silly things. We made sure to get in line for food toward the beginning. We all sat next to each other and ate our fill. We enjoyed every minute of it.

Because someday we'll have to stand in a kitchen, stirring mashed potatoes, baking rolls and cutting turkey. Someday one of our husbands will say the prayer and we'll wait until everyone has been through the line before we get our plates. The house will be so full that we won't get to sit next to each other anymore. As soon as we're done, we'll head to the kitchen for clean up duty. Although, Aubree, Morgan and I agreed that we should make our husbands have clean up duty. :)

It's very strange to realize how quickly I am growing up. So I'll enjoy being young while it lasts.

And to all those moms and aunts and grandmas, who cooked all morning, opened your houses and did tons of dishes -- thank you! Eventually, someday, we will take over for you.
