My favorite Christmas memories

Posted Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at 2:15 PM

Like many people, the Christmas season is definitely my favorite time of the year. I have many fond memories of Christmas from my childhood, and here are a few I'd like to share with you:

1.Many Christmases during my childhood were spent at my grandparent's home in Michigan. I remember the glow of the Christmas tree in the living room and the smell of my grandma's cooking. She was, and still is, an amazing cook who would spend almost the entirety of Christmas Eve prepping for our big Christmas day meal. I loved running around with my siblings and cousins, playing with my grandma's tea set, sliding down the stairs and running around in my grandpa's woodshop. Christmases at my grandparents' house were very special.
2.Winters in Ohio during my childhood were always full of snow. My childhood home sits atop a hill, so all of the kids from our block, including my siblings and I, would spend hours sledding during Christmastime. We'd bundle up, wearing layers upon layers of clothes underneath our snowsuits, and have fun zipping down the hill together. We'd do risky things like riding saucers downhill while standing up or building ramps that we'd fly over. We'd sled until we couldn't feel our noses anymore, and then we'd all disperse and go to our own homes for hot coca or a nice, warm meal from our moms.
3.Every year for Christmas we'd leave milk and cookies out for Santa right on the hearth of our fireplace. I know mostly everyone does this, but it's something I so vividly remember. I remember running to the fireplace on Christmas morning to find the cookies eaten with several crumbs left over, and the milk half full. It was always so great to know that Santa had actually been in our house! I think this tradition continued until I was about 13, even though I was the youngest and was well aware at that point of the secret of Santa. We'll probably revise the tradition this year since my niece will be joining us.
4.One of my favorite gifts I got as a child was a play kitchen. I remember waking up on Christmas morning the year I was 7 or 8 and finding it by our tree with a big bow on it. I was so excited and couldn't stop playing with it. I remember watching the chef almost cook Sebastian on "The Little Mermaid" and thinking I was just like him at my play kitchen. That was definitely one of my favorite gifts of all time.
5.My favorite Christmas movie is "Miracle on 34th Street", the 1990s version, not the old black-and-white. I've loved it since I was a kid, and I still watch it every year. My favorite scene is when Kris Kringle, playing Santa Claus at the Cole's Department store, uses sign language with a deaf girl who came to sit on his lap. Her mother doesn't expect him to be able to talk to her, but he surprises them all by signing with her. It makes me cry every time and is even making me tear up now just thinking of it. I love watching this movie around Christmastime and being reminded of the joy of believing in something.

Those are some of my favorite Christmas memories. What do you like about the holiday season? Are their any special gifts you remember from your childhood? What is your favorite Christmas movie?
