Coon Hunter
Posted Friday, December 2, 2016, at 10:32 AM1This time of year my thoughts linger back to the days of my youth and my dad and our coon hunting days (or nights, that is.) Dad was a coal miner. He worked all day in an underground mine, then after supper had settled, He would say. “Boys (me and brother Tom,) get your boots on. It’s time to go hunting.”... -
Hard to believe
Posted Friday, July 8, 2016, at 4:18 PMAhhh, life is so good if someone don't come along and burst your pride bubble. It all started way back when, about 1950. I was 9 years old and my grandpa Poppy, Robert L. Ray, was 77 years old. He was my mother's father. Occasionally, in the good ole summer time we sat on the front porch at our county line house... -
'Shucks, them old ghost stories ain't true'
Posted Monday, February 8, 2016, at 2:49 PM*But they can scare a boy Back in those good ole days when I was about 12 or 13, us boys, usually me, brother Tom and neighbor Gene, were looking for a little entertainment in the evenings. So, we headed for the LaFollette house, our neighbors, on our bikes... -
Two great swimming holes of long ago
Posted Friday, January 29, 2016, at 2:07 PMIn the summer of 1953 it was time for the boys in the neighborhood to find a good place to get cooled down from the summer heat. Some of the neighbors had already found a good place to swim on Johnson's Branch. The creek ran under the old street car lines (the Interurban)... -
The big bike wreck of 1953
Posted Sunday, July 12, 2015, at 7:33 PM1Boy were we ever happy, my brother, Tom and I . Dad (Santa Claus) had given us new bikes for Christmas. The brand name on them was something like Western Flyer and they were fancy with an enclosed straddle bar and headlight (but we couldn't afford batteries). They also had a double-knee action spring above the front wheel. The tires were the balloon kind with white walls. The bikes had a glorious red paint job. Years later, Pee Wee Herman had nothing on us... -
Remembering grandpa Poppy
Posted Monday, June 29, 2015, at 2:12 PMI was a dreaming a few weeks back about my grandpa, "Poppy." It was sorta this way. I had just got back from a walk in West Virginia at a small town close to wherever we lived and was talking to Poppy and told him where I had been (at the time I was just a lad.) His reply was, "Oh, yes, I know about that place. I went with two girls down there years ago."... -
Remembering Harry Jones
Posted Thursday, April 9, 2015, at 11:48 AMI went to see Harry Jones back in the middle 1980s when he was selling his hardware store, The Brazil Hardware. I told him who I was and then asked if he remembered Cordell Hull. His eyes lit up and he said with a smile, "I sure do. H was my favorite fighter among the boys that boxed and became champs. I favored him."... -
Always remember - mothers do care
Posted Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at 11:02 AMMany years ago when I was in school and those were the good old days, as I remember I was never very fast to catch on. There were several of my subjects that just stumbled through. And as time passed my grades began to get worse. Being slow to learn, if I missed the first part of the lesson then the next day's lesson didn't make sense, so on it went until test time. ...
