Summer food delivery has begun
This is week 2 of Summer Delivery 2020. Here is what many of our volunteers have done on Sunday afternoons since the sudden closing of schools for School Program 19/20 and the sudden change in all we knew to do to get food home to the kids. Everything we had learned to do over the years was suddenly not possible.
Our volunteers did not give up! Groups of less than 100, then less than 10 to do the work of many. We have struggled to get in enough food to deliver every week, but have had enough every week so far. So many items are limited and short supply!
Save a Lot simplified the process for us by allowing us to not only purchase the food from them, but allowed us to store and pack the food there. This helped greatly! We didn’t have to load, unload and then pack the food and then load to vehicles. We only pack the food and load to volunteers vehicles each Sunday afternoon.
Our volunteers have shown up every Sunday afternoon to pick up the food and deliver to families. A small group of volunteers has been there every Sunday to pack the food and load vehicles. They have done the work that was done by many in the past. Some have been there every Sunday, but as things are changing a bit, please let us know if you are available to be “on call” to deliver on Sunday afternoons in Clay County North this Summer and Clay County South is looking for volunteers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in June at Cory Community Church of the Nazarene. They have a much smaller number of children in CCS so are stepping out in faith to deliver three times a week.
Way back at the beginning of March (which seems years ago), we shared that we were concerned because we had spent $52,430.09 in for the School Program 18/19 and were at $64,242.41 in cost at the beginning of March 2020. We just totaled up School Program 19/20’s total cost with the sudden change to delivering a week of shelf-stable food every Sunday. We spent $93,002.04 for School Program 19/20 and our community made sure we had the funds! It does cost a bit more to feed a child for the week than a weekend.
We are rolling into Summer 2020. CC North will continue to deliver on Sunday afternoons and CC South will deliver on Monday, Wednesday and Friday late morning as long as we get the food in each week.
How is this possible? Every person who donates food, money and their time makes this Program possible. We continue to make this up as we go along and our community helps us figure it out and gives as they are able what is in their heart.
This has been an crazy, amazing and awe inspiring journey and it isn’t over. Through this all, our community has stepped up in ways we could not have imagined three months ago. Someone is in charge and it isn’t us! #webelieve
