As the IU world turns
Posted Friday, May 9, at 2:57 PM
The lingering effects of Kelvin Sampson's departure from Indiana University still seem to be looming like storm clouds over the program.
The interesting thing now is that Eli Holman's recent loss has seemed to have taken on a slightly sinister tone after recent comments by new coach Tom Crean. For those unaware of the situation, Holman left last Thursday and the meeting included an outburst that led to police being called though he was not charged with anything. Holman has now enrolled at Detroit Mercy where former IU assistant (under Sampson and Dan Dakich) is now the head coach. Apparently, Crean felt that Holman's decision to transfer was based on family. Holman is from California. Now it looks as if McCallum may have had a role in bringing Holman with him following the coach's leaving IU at the end of the season. During an interview with the Herald Times of Bloomington on Thursday, Crean commented that he felt that there was a certain amount of orchestrating behind the scenes by McCallum to draw Holman to his new job. Smells a bit like the Mike Davis/Robert Vaden situation to me. On the positive however, Crean has wasted little time in filling the gaps left by the release of Terre Haute South alum, Armon Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis. Verdell Jones, a 6'4 point guard out of Champaign, Ill. has announced that he will become the fifth member of Crean's incoming recruiting class. Jones had drawn interest from Arizona, but the Wildcats couldn't or wouldn't offer him a scholarship. He also had offers from Minnesota and Kentucky. Jones averaged 17 ppg. for Champaign Central High School and led the team to the semifinals of the state tourney for the first time since 1969. The incoming class also includes guards Nick Williams, Matt Roth, Devan Dumes and Tom Pritchard. Roth, also of Illinois, set the career mark of 3-pointers made in his high school career. He hit more than 45 percent of his shots from long range his final two seasons that concluded with a final four appearance this year. Bloomington South point guard Jordan Hulls has also been offered a scholarship by Crean after his emergence as a rising talent in AAU Tourney's this spring. Maybe the newest sign of the apocalypse is the recent news that Kentucky coach Billy Gillespie recently offered a scholarship to an eighth-grader from California following his performance at the King James tourney in Akron, Ohio. Michael Avery, 6'4 player from Lake Sherwood, California, drew Gillespie's notice while playing for, are you ready for this, the Indiana Elite team. Yes, for Hoosier high school basketball fans, Avery's parents were in state to discuss their son's possible addition to Culver, a private school here in Indiana. While here, Culver's coach introduced Avery to the Indiana Elite staff and they invited him to play with the squad at the Ohio Tourney. Apparently Avery made a big impression on Gillespie, who is obviously getting a pretty big head start on the class of 2011-12. So congratulations to the Avery family are in order. I imagine it's gotta be pretty nice to have your college education seemingly paid for before you spend your first day in a high school cafeteria.
Farewell and safe travels Melinda Friday is a bit of a melancholy type of day for myself and I'm sure everyone else here in The Brazil Times office. One of our reporters, Melinda Quasius, logs her final hours for us here at the Times and I for one will sorely miss her and her wide range of journalism skills as well as the spirited sports discussions we've had in her stint in area code 47834...
How quickly a season can go awry Well it didn't take long for those previously happy possibilities for the Cincinnati Reds' season to turn into the usual doubts. A season that seemed full of promise just two weeks ago has already begun to flounder like one of those baby seal pups that killer whales feed on along the shore...
Dirt track racing gets underway this weekend at least on Friday Love him or hate him, but you can't argue the talent and the speed that Scott Bloomquist brings to the dirt late model tracks around the nation. Undoubtedly, at least for this weekend, his competition is hoping that he might take a break and give them a break at Lowe's Motor Speedway...
Weather wreaking havoc on area openers Well it looks as is Mother Nature is preparing to sic her wrath upon race fans once more this weekend. Kamp Motorspeedway has had to cancel for the weekend as well as Attica over in Ohio and for the moment the decision on Lincoln Park Speedway's opener is up in the air...
Is there ever any good news during the offseason? Is there really any true end to a sporting season anymore? When the Super Bowl is over, when the final parade was over following the World Series a fan used to have to wait for months until they could enjoy their favorite sport. Not these days. The Super Bowl might have concluded a couple of months ago, but we're right back in the thick of meetings that will have a profound affect next year...
At least for a little while longer, my Cincinnati Reds still have a shot The final days of March don't really mean much unless of course you're a baseball fan. For me, it annually means that my beloved Cincinnati Reds still are a contender. For fans of any small market teams it means that your team still has a shot at making the playoffs and if you're a Cubs fan, this could still be your year...
Mother Nature wreaking havoc on Midwest racing schedules Mother Nature is proving once more that she is one fickle lady. While racers and fans certainly know that the opening dates at Midwest tracks are always in limbo as winter is winding down, we always hold out hope that the weather might provide a break for us...
Break out your dancing shoes I've never been much of a dancer, except perhaps at prom or the occasional wedding, but the call of March changes things amongst most sports fans. This weekend will fill out the dance cards to see who is getting an invitation to the NCAA basketball version of the prom...
Ready to go racing yet? It's nearly time If you're a dirt track racing fan like myself, this has been an interminably long and cold winter without said racing. Alas I couldn't get away to Florida like some of my photography peers for Speed Weeks in February. (Sigh! Lucky dogs). I wasn't able to make it to the party in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Chili Bowl either, though the pay-per-view was pretty sweet...
