Farewell and safe travels Melinda
Posted Friday, May 2, at 1:37 PM
Friday is a bit of a melancholy type of day for myself and I'm sure everyone else here in The Brazil Times office.

One of our reporters, Melinda Quasius, logs her final hours for us here at the Times and I for one will sorely miss her and her wide range of journalism skills as well as the spirited sports discussions we've had in her stint in area code 47834.

Our good natured ribbing of her Wisconsin-bred feelings that Brett Favre is/was the second coming was always something to look forward to during the drizzly fall weekdays and chilled-to-the-bone winter afternoons.

I can't fault her for being a Cubs fan, as I, as a lifelong Reds fan have been brought up to scowl at all the 'Wait til next year' talk. But I certainly must give credit where it is due.

The girl knows her stuff.

The eternal devil's advocate, I've been frustrated at many a sports bar argument with someone who claims simply to be the trivia champion of the world, but who in reality doesn't know a Hail Mary from a hallelujah.

Melinda could certainly bury you under an avalanche (Her favorite hockey team by the way, and sorry by the way Melinda on their fate at the hands of the dreaded Red Wings) of facts that could back you into a corner if you didn't back up your opinion.

I'll definitely miss her ability to keep me sane, more or less, during the incessantly busy spring sports season.

Hers and Jason's sports knowledge has helped me extend The Brazil Times coverage of local sports to the best it's been in my time here. So I, and hopefully the community, recognize their efforts in plugging along for a few more hours in an already long work week to better the Times.

But what I think all of us will miss the most is the fact that she is a bit of fresh air and a kind soul in a world that seems to be sorely lacking at times in that category.

So I wish her and her fiancée a safe journey in their move to the grand East Coast, even though I, having been in Philadelphia quite a lot, can't bring myself to call New Jersey so grand.

I know she'll bring her new employers just as much talent and diligence as she brought us here. So I bid Miss Quasius a fine adieu and hopefully not a goodbye, but simply a til next time.

Rain, rain stay come back during a week day!

The weather just didn't seem to want to leave us race fans alone in April and now the forecasters are calling for the wet stuff to continue into the first weekend of May.

The fans have waited long enough for the Terre Haute Action Track (new and improved from the pictures I've seen) to re-open.

Now the rain has postponed the event until Sunday with hot laps beginning at 4 p.m.

The Midwest Sprint Car Series is slated to open the season for Terre Haute with pit gates opening at noon for the sprints only show.

The $3,000 to win show should provide an interesting field after USAC crews hit Brownstown for its Saturday show. With Kokomo also holding a special show, both tracks should get a talented field of drivers.

Congratulations go to DHK Promotions, which include Terre Haute businessman Brian Dorsett along with Davey Hamilton, familiar for his nine trips to compete in the Indy 500. Mike King, known as the voice of the 500 and the Indy Car Series, rounds out the promoters responsible for bringing the track back to life.

Sunday's race will be the Clabber Girl "Don Smith Classic" presented by Indiana State University.

Fans will be very pleasantly surprised to see all of the remarkable changes and improvements made to the track in such a short time.

Concrete barriers have replaced the guardrails and teams will be pitting in the infield so fans can be up close and personal to their favorite drivers.

The infield family pass has been brought back for $25 with single infield tickets just $10 apiece. Seats in the bleachers and grandstands range from $15 to $25.

How quickly a season can go awry
Posted Friday, April 25, at 3:01 PM

Well it didn't take long for those previously happy possibilities for the Cincinnati Reds' season to turn into the usual doubts. A season that seemed full of promise just two weeks ago has already begun to flounder like one of those baby seal pups that killer whales feed on along the shore...

Dirt track racing gets underway this weekend at least on Friday
Posted Friday, April 18, at 2:16 PM

Love him or hate him, but you can't argue the talent and the speed that Scott Bloomquist brings to the dirt late model tracks around the nation. Undoubtedly, at least for this weekend, his competition is hoping that he might take a break and give them a break at Lowe's Motor Speedway...

Weather wreaking havoc on area openers
Posted Friday, April 11, at 10:54 PM

Well it looks as is Mother Nature is preparing to sic her wrath upon race fans once more this weekend. Kamp Motorspeedway has had to cancel for the weekend as well as Attica over in Ohio and for the moment the decision on Lincoln Park Speedway's opener is up in the air...

Is there ever any good news during the offseason?
Posted Friday, April 4, at 7:25 PM

Is there really any true end to a sporting season anymore? When the Super Bowl is over, when the final parade was over following the World Series a fan used to have to wait for months until they could enjoy their favorite sport. Not these days. The Super Bowl might have concluded a couple of months ago, but we're right back in the thick of meetings that will have a profound affect next year...

At least for a little while longer, my Cincinnati Reds still have a shot
Posted Friday, March 28, at 6:53 PM

The final days of March don't really mean much unless of course you're a baseball fan. For me, it annually means that my beloved Cincinnati Reds still are a contender. For fans of any small market teams it means that your team still has a shot at making the playoffs and if you're a Cubs fan, this could still be your year...

Mother Nature wreaking havoc on Midwest racing schedules
Posted Friday, March 21, at 5:15 PM

Mother Nature is proving once more that she is one fickle lady. While racers and fans certainly know that the opening dates at Midwest tracks are always in limbo as winter is winding down, we always hold out hope that the weather might provide a break for us...

Break out your dancing shoes
Posted Friday, March 14, at 8:58 PM

I've never been much of a dancer, except perhaps at prom or the occasional wedding, but the call of March changes things amongst most sports fans. This weekend will fill out the dance cards to see who is getting an invitation to the NCAA basketball version of the prom...

Ready to go racing yet? It's nearly time
Posted Friday, March 7, at 9:22 PM

If you're a dirt track racing fan like myself, this has been an interminably long and cold winter without said racing. Alas I couldn't get away to Florida like some of my photography peers for Speed Weeks in February. (Sigh! Lucky dogs). I wasn't able to make it to the party in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Chili Bowl either, though the pay-per-view was pretty sweet...

Thanks for the memories Mitch
Posted Monday, March 3, at 8:49 PM

Coach Mitch Lancaster wasn't interested in any sort of pomp and circumstance regarding his retirement from teaching the game of basketball. In fact, only those very close to the coach even had an inkling that he was planning on hanging up his whistle following the conclusion of Northview's basketball season...
