Not a bad haul for Lynch on National Signing Day
Posted Wednesday, February 3, at 5:14 PM
While the fax machines in Athletic Directors' offices around the country are finally cooling off following National Signing Day, coaches can finally begin to take stock in what their new freshman classes will look like.
There isn't nearly the hoopla on this day for Indiana colleges that there is in SEC country where I imagine your hardcore football fans might actually be taking a sick day to stay glued to ESPNU's coverage. It isn't unusual for a number of those southern colleges to hold big booster parties to celebrate the signing of blue chip player after blue chip player. Here in Indiana, signing day didn't bring many surprises for the Indiana Hoosiers, but one big positive was the signing of cornerback Andre Kates, who had entertained several other football programs after winning the Junior College Player of the Year by one publication. The Hoosiers were able to maintain his commitment and he should immediately help a very so-so secondary with his combination of size (6'0, 200 lbs) and speed, 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. Kates joins 24 other recruits for the Hoosiers, which were signed by about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. While the Hoosiers' class hasn't exactly drawn great praise from the recruiting gurus, there is some talent as well as quality student/athletes joining the program. Some notable facts about the class include the fact that 11-of-25 members of the class are on the honor roll or a member of the National Honor Society. Kofi Hughes, a quarterback/athlete from Indianapolis Cathedral High School, was named the 2009 Gatorade Indiana Football Player of the Year after completing 89-of-151 passes for 1,584 yards with 15 TD's and four interceptions last season. He also rushed 201 times for 1,552 yards and 22 scores. He was rated as the 10th-best prospect in Indiana and the 55th-best QB in the nation by Scout.com. Running back Matt Perez (5'11, 200 lb.) also put up some staggering numbers for Maine South High School in Illinois where he was named the ESPNChicago.com 2009 Player of the Year. He finished his career with 5,170 all-purpose yards and 68 scores. In two varsity seasons as a starter, Perez ran for 3,393 yards and 56 TD's and added 35 catches for 441 yards to help his team to back-to-back state championships. "We are very pleased to welcome this group to Indiana University," Indiana head coach Bill Lynch said via press release. "Once again our staff put forth a tremendous effort and worked extremely hard to assemble this talented crop of young men. These 25 student-athletes will excel not only on the football field, but also in the classroom and community, and will represent the football program and IU with class and character." Eight players in the class reside from Ohio, four from Indiana, three from Michigan, two each from Illinois, Wisconsin and California, and one from Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland and Washington, D.C. The Hoosiers signed 15 players on the defensive and 10 on the offensive side of the ball. Indiana added six linebackers, four cornerbacks, three defensive linemen and two safeties. IU also welcomed three running backs, two wide receivers, tight ends and offensive linemen, and one quarterback/athlete for the incoming class of 2009.
Feb. 3 is Christmas Day for college football coaches If you're a college football coach, National Signing Day is akin to Christmas day and that day is approaching quickly as February rolls around. For both Indiana and Purdue, there is a scramble to try and secure those last one or two jewels in the rough...
Don't look now, but baseball season is looming With the winter chill still in the air, the first sign that spring is at least on the way is that it's now less than 30 days until pitchers and catchers arrive at spring training. With that in mind, the free agent signing process is heating up with some pretty big names still out there for the taking...
The time is now for Indianapolis Colts The time is now, the playoffs are here. What happens over the next four weeks or so will go a long way in determining how this year's edition of the Indianapolis Colts is remembered. Another postseason flameout and those 14 wins to end the season will be a fleeting memory and Bill Polian will be firmly in the crosshairs amongst fervent fans. ...
Good luck to next Notre Dame head football coach If you're a Notre Dame football fan, you've already begun to rue the day that you knew the name Charlie Weis. The former offensive coordinator with the swagger of being with the Bill Belichick-led New England Patriots, came to Notre Dame with that same arrogance that his former NFL franchise had instilled in him. ...
Cocky Belichick isn't quite as smart as he might think Oh no Mr. Roboto! The New England Patriots perpetually stoic and arrogant head coach, Bill Belichick, finally got a little too smart for his own good. Believe me, I'm not one to argue the intelligence of Belichick who is one of the best in the business, but on Sunday night, it was beautiful to see some of that cockiness blow up right in his face. ...
Homecoming an important date for IU sports Saturday's homecoming weekend at Indiana University was a bit more important than a lot of alumni coming back to do a lot of drinking with old college buddies. While I'm sure that there was plenty of intoxicated folks around campus and in the parking lot of Memorial Stadium, the real important things took place both inside and outside the stadium on campus...
Listening through the underground Music, unadulterated sound and beauty a stunning blast of difference from a bland life. That's what I have always loved about the medium. My goodness, as a middle school kid, I was a fair to middling athlete that didn't really have an outlet until I realized what non-top 40 music was. And wow, I mean wow, once I found the secret pipeline to 'different sounding bliss' oh did I embrace it!...
Former Knights off to strong collegiate starts in 2009 Northview High School graduates have seen some success in their athletic activities in college early in the fall season this year. Kaley Huffman has seen action in several matches for the IUPUI Jaguars volleyball team that has opened the season with an 8-1 mark overall...
Lynch coaching for his job beginning on Thursday The annual Save Bill Lynch's Job Campaign begins on Thursday evening, not coincidentally on the same night as the Indiana Hoosiers open the football season against Eastern Kentucky at 8 p.m. The Colonels won't be any sort of a pushover because they boast 31 consecutive winnings seasons, second only to Florida State's 32...
