Updates on local collegiate and professional athletesPosted Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at 9:47 PM
As the summer has gotten hotter in August, former Northview Knight, Brady Shoemaker has also been red hot for the Kannapolis Intimidators in the Class A South Atlantic League.
Though he had some struggles earlier in the season, Shoemaker, has been one of the top hitters in the league during the month of August. He has hit at a .391 clip over 14 games for the Intimidators this month and has seven doubles and a pair of home runs. He's also drove in 13 runs and has been on base nearly 50 percent of the time. Shoemaker also has slugged .674 this month.
Amazingly, Shoemaker has raised his batting average each month, hitting .271 in June, .274 in July and now .391 as the season winds down. Since the All-Star break, Shoemaker has hit .306 with 13 doubles and five home runs while driving in 30 runs in 43 games.
For the season, Shoemaker has hit .293 over 96 games and has 12 home runs, 55 RBI and 23 doubles and has hit .327 with runners in scoring position.
A number of Clay County high school graduates are prepping for the 2010 college sports season to begin.
At Indiana State, Kylee Thacker begins her sophomore season with the Sycamore cross country team. As a freshman, Thacker placed 20th at the Bradley Open in 19:55 and took 86th in the Indiana Intercollegiates with a time of 20:39 and was 61st at the Missouri Valley Conference Meet in 21:09.
At Northview, Thacker lettered in cross country for three years and track for four years and also owns the school record at four-kilometers (15:48) and in the 3,200 meters (11:20).
At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, the cross country team was in its first year of existence in 2009 with a pair of talented former Knights.
Both Cassandra Barnett and Allie True were members of that inaugural Pomeroy's team that succeeded in winning the national championship in New Hampshire last year.
"Casandra has already made an impact on the team, not only with her leadership, but her talent," coach Danelle Readinger said. "She and Allie both are assets to this team. Last year we were able to win our USCAA National Cross Country Championship title, and it looks like we have another great season ahead of us."
The 2010 schedule and roster has not been released at the time of publication. However, the team has a home meet on Sept. 10.
John Latta, a former soccer player and track standout from Northview, is a junior at the University of Southern Indiana and a member of the cross country team.
Last year he earned all-conference honors after finishing 49th at the GLVC Championships while competing in five meets and running top-seven for the Eagles one time.
At Rend Lake College, sophomore Kade Baker and the Warriors embark on the 2010 fall season on Aug. 27 when the team hosts the Rend Lake College Fall Preview Invite at the Franklin County Country Club.
