The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball program has been a fixture in the USCAA National Invitational Tournament over the last decade and this season was no different.
The Pomeroys finished as the runner-up for the second straight season after winning the national title in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. In 2009, SMWC placed third in the national tourney.
Over her four-year career with the Pomeroys, Clay City High School graduate, Chelsee Gerber, has been a big part of that success.
In the 2010 USCAA National Tournament held in Akron, Ohio, SMWC placed second with a 3-2 mark in the tourney. The Pomeroys knocked off Southern State, 13-3 in the first game and Southern Virginia 10-2 in game two. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods won 8-2 in the third game before falling 1-0 to Robert Morris. Gerber had the lone hit of the game for the Pomeroys. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods lost to Robert Morris in game 5, 2-1, to conclude their tourney run.
Gerber was 5-for-9 with a double and three RBI in the 2010 tourney.
In this year's tourney, SMWC opened play against Judson College and picked up a 5-1 victory as Gerber went 1-for-3 with an RBI while playing leftfield in the win. The second game of the tourney saw the Pomeroys take on Penn State Mont Alto and come away with a 5-2 win as Gerber drew a walk in two official at-bats.
The third game of the tourney saw a re-match against Judson and this time the result was a loss for SMWC, 3-2. Gerber scored a run in an 0-for-3 contest.
With their collective backs against the wall, SMWC rebounded to drop Judson by a 6-2 score as Gerber moved up in the lineup from the No. 9 slot in the lineup to the second spot. The senior responded with a 3-for-4 performance with a pair of runs scored, including a double.
Advancing to the title games, SMWC needed to beat Rochester twice, but came away with a pair of losses. The Pomeroys lost 3-0 and then 8-6 despite Gerber going 2-for-3 in the final game.
Through the regular season (May 3), Gerber finished her senior season by hitting .346 in 29 starts, piling up 27 hits in 78 at-bats with 14 RBI and nine runs scored.
