Tryptophan and the tribe
Posted Monday, November 16, at 7:50 PM
In a mere 10 days is everyone's 10,000-calorie holiday: Thanksgiving.

Growing up, my family would regularly snack on cheese, crackers, vegetables and chips and dip while watching the parades -- local or Macy's -- and football until the turkey and fixings were done.

A few years before I moved here, my parents bought a turkey fryer, which only added to the anticipation for Thanksgiving. The crispy, yet juicy bird made our mouths water like Pavlov's dog.

While I currently do not have a turkey fryer of my own, it hasn't taken away from the Thanksgiving excitement.

This year, like the past couple, my family and I have not yet fully planned out the menu, but without a doubt, it will be great.

We've discussed possibilities like whether to have duck, turkey, ham, whatever is on sale and even the all-American favorites burgers and hot dogs.

But food is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the biggest reason I love Thanksgiving.

Most of the time, our schedules take us every which way except home, but on this one day the family is together communicating while chowing down before the inevitable Tryptophan coma.

Even with the stresses of daily life and panic to get all the side dishes done without burning the bird, it is nice to sit down with my loved ones -- whether it be a few minutes or a couple hours -- and relax with family and/or friends talking and laughing while enjoying a great meal.

'Dawgs' in second season; quick look at the Knights
Posted Monday, November 9, at 5:04 PM

My hometown La Porte (Texas) Bulldogs football team easily defeated South Houston 34-0 to finish the regular season 6-3. The game was all but a moot point as playoff matchups were determined by the University Scholastic League (UIL) early Friday before kickoff...

Battling all year long
Posted Monday, November 2, at 4:31 PM

Football season may have come to a dismal end for the Northview Knights a couple weeks ago, but for my hometown high school, the final game of the regular season is of utmost importance. Projected to almost be a playoff lock in its district at the beginning of the season, the La Porte Bulldogs were dealt a couple of early blows which could have derailed the season...

Something's missing

Well, we're heading into the end of October and things just don't feel quite right. Since I came to The Brazil Times in September 2006, this has been the time of year when tensions were running high because an election was near. However, with this being an off year, there is no election to focus on and it makes me feel a bit out of sorts...

The first round of Christmas shopping madness
Posted Monday, October 5, at 5:22 PM

Coming up the next two weekends is the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. Since I moved here a little more than three years ago, it has become my second biggest Christmas shopping time behind, of course, the day after Thanksgiving. Considering I enjoy going to yard sales, the Covered Bridge Festival is a haven of treasures just waiting to be found...

Just how safe are some prescription medications?
Posted Monday, September 28, at 4:47 PM

Side effects are a way of life. Anything you do or say has some sort of effect on either yourself or others. However, I have found one aspect in many of our lives where the side effects can be just too much at times: Prescription medications. Now I understand getting a doctor's permission to take flu medicine or pain medication after surgery, but lately, there seems to be an abundance of prescriptions on the market with a laundry list of health concerns which, to me, would make individuals not want to take them.. ...

Nothing better than good food
Posted Monday, September 21, at 6:51 PM

Good food cures most ills. There is nothing quite like sitting down at the end of a long stressful day and chowing down on a great meal, is there? In my opinion, there's not. It doesn't matter if it's cooked by a loved one, yourself or the local fast-food place down the road, it doesn't get any better than taking that first bite of a burger, steak or salad and hearing all the annoying chatter in your head flutter away, even if it's for a second or two...

The sun sets on the alley

Over time, television shows come and go. Some don't last beyond the initial four-show test, while others spend more than a decade on the air. On Sunday, America saw the final episode in the 13-year history of the Hill family on King of the Hill. Who would have thought a spinoff of MTV's Beavis and Butthead would have lasted so long on network television?...

Safe ... but for how long?
Posted Monday, August 24, at 4:11 PM

In recent years, records have been broken that many thought to have been untouchable. Peyton Manning topped Dan Marino's mark of 48 touchdown passes in a single season, which was then broken by Tom Brady a couple seasons ago. Plus, Emmitt Smith set the standard by scoring 25 rushing touchdowns in 1995, only to be bettered by Priest Holmes in 2003, Shaun Alexander in 2005 and LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006...

Second chances aren't so bad
Posted Monday, August 17, at 3:49 PM

Everyone deserves a second chance. After serving his sentence for being convicted on federal dog fighting charges, Michael Vick was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles last week. As expected, protesters have set up outside the Eagles' training camp facility voicing their displeasure with the move...
