Big men moving onPosted Tuesday, July 19, at 5:25 PM It must be the week for big men to announce they are moving on. Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is preparing to officially announce his retirement from professional basketball in Shanghai, China, which will leave a large void in the NBA's international fanfare...
Much more fun to come The Fourth of July has passed, and there have been plenty of remarks about the quality of the Celebration put on by the Brazil Rotary. It may not have been what we hoped it would be. In fact, it may not necessarily been what Rotary members hoped it would be...
Just get them back on the field It's now day too many of the NFL lockout imposed by its owners. This is just another situation in which grown adults are squabbling over money. Initially, I thought it was ridiculous representation for the players was demanding to see the owners' financial books for the past 10 years...
Just another foot in the mouth Well here we are, May 23, 2011, with the world still intact. Harold Camping must be pounding his head against the wall right now hoping that the third time is really a charm. The Christian radio broadcaster originally predicted the "Rapture" would occur Sept. 4, 1994, and when that date passed without incident, stated he had miscalculated and said it would actually happen this past Saturday...
Starting from scratch for a greater cause The process begins again. On Saturday, I had my hair cut off during our county's Relay For Life event, and once again it was a big hit. However, this time I decided to completely rid my head and face of its hair, including my eyebrows. In total, I was able to raise more than $220 for the American Cancer Society, $150 of which came in a mad dash to win the right to shave off the eyebrows, and make another substantial donation to Locks of Love, in which a young child with cancer will be able to benefit.. ...
What the ...? The results of Tuesday's Municipal Primary Election left me baffled. I'm not talking about who won and who lost because political positions are revolving doors in any given time. I'm referring to the figure of 20.24 percent. That is how many of the registered voters in the six precincts who took the few minutes needed to cast a ballot and have their voices heard through the polls...
2,200 miles in 70 hours The past few days have been quite a blur and the next few will be spent getting my bearings back in line. About noon this past Thursday, my brother and I headed back to Texas to pick up his tools and some of his other possessions as he is moving here to Brazil...
Tweaking the field just a little bit Championship Week in college basketball is upon us. The Big East Tournament is in full swing, and numerous other conferences are in the process of finalizing their champions, which will receive automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament. March Madness will be slightly different this year with 68 teams making the Big Dance...
To pay or not to pay? It should not even be a question. We're getting down to the last couple weeks before NFL officials reach a deadline to come up with a new collective bargaining agreement. Right now, the two sides appear to be far apart, so the possibility of a lockout is starting to look more and more like a reality...
Who's afraid of a little snow? Looking over this weekend's NFL Conference Championship matchups, I can't help but get a little excited about February 2014. At that time, provided the end of the Mayan calendar doesn't destroy us all, the Super Bowl will be played in New York. Yes, snow and frigid New York...
Who to cheer for now? Blog Well, there are eight teams left vying for this year's Super Bowl and all three of my favorite teams are out of the hunt. The San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans both had very disappointing seasons and failed to make the playoffs while the Colts took an early bow Saturday...
Idea of steroids not really affecting Bagwell's chances Major League Baseball recently announced Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven as its newest inductees into its Hall of Fame. For Blyleven, it was a long time coming that I think should have happened years ago. Also, former Houston Astro Jeff Bagwell had his first shot to make the Hall of Fame, but fell well short, appearing on 41.7 percent of the ballots. Those eligible must appear on at least 75 percent of the ballots to be inducted...
As the NFL is about to enter the final full month of its regular season, everything is still pretty much up in the air. The AFC South is especially wide open with all four teams still capable of winning the division. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts are 6-5, while the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans are only a game back at 5-6...
It's an easy first step This is truly pathetic. Less than 46 percent of this county's registered voters managed to cast a ballot in this year's General Election. There is no excuse for so many people to not take a few minutes to help decide who should be our representatives...
Phone on hold and celebrating new lives It's been a hectic week, and its not quite over yet, but there is a few minutes to take a breather. The big push for the 2010 General Election is coming the next couple weeks, and it can't reach its end as soon as possible. So many people are becoming worn down by the political walls closing in on them with the inundation of phone calls, mailings and other press tossing political information from every angle...
Waiting for brains to start leaking out ears I am always amazed at how naive people get as an election nears. Those who are normally skeptics suddenly become entrenched in believing everything said or broadcast to them. Personally, I become even more skeptical about what any and all candidates, particularly in state and national races, proclaim to be the truth...
Big weekend upcoming for NFL teams This is a big week for a lot of NFL teams. The Pittsburgh Steelers (Ben Roethlisberger), New York Jets (Santonio Holmes) and my hometown Houston Texans (Brian Cushing) all get big-time players back from suspension, while another big name (Randy Moss) is getting a second homecoming of sorts with the Minnesota Vikings...
Not many sparks left in the baseball tank The Major League Baseball regular season comes to a close in about a week-and-a-half, and with a couple of exceptions, the playoff picture is pretty much set. The Minnesota Twins clinched its division a couple days ago, the Texas Rangers have a large lead in the west and the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays continue to battle to decide who will win the American League East, and who will be the wild card team...
Christmas creeping up with a billy club It always amazes me how early stores prepare for an upcoming holiday. A couple of weeks ago, I started seeing decorations and candy being put out on the shelves for Halloween, which is still a month-and-a-half away. Is anyone really buying candy now to hand out to trick-or-treaters six weeks from now? I highly doubt it because if I did that, the candy wouldn't last a week in my house...
Surviving "hell week" and looking into a cloudy crystal ball Wow, what a hectic week, and I'm not even through Thursday. In the past 55 hours or so, I have attended meetings of the Clay County Commissioners, Clay County Council and Common Council of the City of Brazil, along with sat through the entirety of the County Council's hearings on the 2011 budget...
