Speak your mind freely

As journalists, we sometimes encounter times we like to call "dark periods," where we have trouble finding newsworthy stories.
That's where you, the readers, come into play. We welcome calls or e-mails letting us know about various events going on in the community that we might not hear about from our regular sources. However, we also sometimes find it difficult to learn about things when people are unwilling to divulge information "on the record." When people tell us they don't want to be quoted or photographed, even for our "On the Street" feature, we cannot use the information provided, potentially preventing us from completing a story to the level necessary to tell all sides. On the other hand, what we learn from "off the record" conversations may also help to give us another perspective or angle to approach a story. We also love to receive feedback from the community. This allows us to analyze how we did on a particular story, and possibly do a follow-up story later on. Readers have an optimum opportunity, on a daily basis, to give us feedback. Whether it be by phone, e-mail, written letter or even a comment underneath a story we post online, it is always helpful and appreciated. While feedback is not always positive, we do get a good feeling from it because we know our efforts to provide the news to the general public is not going unnoticed. So feel free to let us know how we are doing, what you would like to see in the paper or on the website, and put in your two cents on any and all stories you want.
Your thoughts on our site With the busy schedules we have as journalists, it can be difficult to check our website as much as we would like to. We would like your opinion about our site. What do you like and dislike? Is the site easy to navigate? What changes do you think should be made to improve the site?...
Rinse, wash, repeat Change is stressful, and stress tends to lead to change. There's going to be a lot of both in the next week or so. I'm heading to a seminar, the paper is losing one reporter and replacing her with a new one, Loyalty Day and the Relay for Life event is this weekend then, to top it all off, the election is this upcoming Tuesday...
A little known piece of American history We recently passed an anniversary of a moment in American history that is commonly overlooked by most living outside of Texas. Monday was the 172nd anniversary of Texas winning its independence from Mexico in the Battle of San Jacinto. Many people are aware of the Battle of the Alamo, where approximately 250 people attempted to free Texas in March 1836, with nearly all of the defenders perishing...
Weather has its ups and downs Weather is an interesting thing. There are unexpected events, like today's earthquake, that throw us all for a loop and gets us talking. Other events, like hurricanes, you can see coming days ahead of time, but you have to watch them like a hawk because in a matter of a few hours a small one can hit the warm water and turn into a monster...
All for none, none for all I have gotten to the point where very little surprises me anymore. The City of Brazil has decided to clean itself up and enforce ordinances which have basically been glazed over for, what it seems, the past couple decades. That didn't surprise me. But the reaction has...
Hold on. . .Time to space out After a long week of working, there is nothing better than sitting back and relaxing. However, it can be extremely difficult to find the time. Work can take up the time needed to run errands, get groceries and other things needed which take up the "free time" one might have to take a moment and clear the mind...
Back in the early days. . . The NBA is currently in its 61st year on existence and so many teams have come and gone in that time. Most fans of the league are aware the Fort Wayne Pistons preceded the Indiana Pacers as a team that played in the league from Indiana. However, there were two other teams that played in the early days of the league...
No bad through the first 16 games The first day of the NCAA Tournament and, luckily, my bracket is not in shambles. I went 13-3 on my picks Thursday, with my only incorrect choices were Kent State, Baylor and Winthrop, who I also had defeating Notre Dame in the second round. The highlight of the night, for me, was seeing Kansas State take down USC, who many of the "experts" had making it at least to the Elite 8 which, oddly enough, is where I have Kansas State heading...
A random, sarcastic thought The now former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned last week because of his involvement in a sex scandal. About 10 years ago, President Bill Clinton was involved in a sex scandal of his own, although, he was able to "serve" the rest of his term...
