College football flawed but funPosted Monday, December 10, 2007, at 4:47 PM
College football is filled with controversy every year it seems, and this year has been no different.
The National Championship game features Ohio State vs. LSU, which should be a good game, but it isn't what I feel it should have been. LSU has two losses, as do many other teams, but they finished the season very weak by beating an overrated Tennessee team by only a touchdown, and yet they jumped five spots in the polls. The biggest travesty of the BCS this year is the exclusion of Missouri, who was rated No. 1 going into the Big 12 Championship Game and lost to a great Oklahoma team. By BCS rules, only two teams from a conference can play in BCS games, which if Missouri were to be included, it would mean the one-loss Kansas Jawhawks, who Missouri defeated, would have been left out. It turned into a double-edged sword. Add on top of that the case of Hawaii. They went undefeated, albeit against a weak schedule, but still received no consideration for a National Title. If Boise State showed us anything last year, or Appalachian State this year for that matter, it's that smaller schools can indeed compete on a high level. I'm looking forward to seeing Colt Brennan and the Rainbow Warriors light up the scoreboard in the Sugar Bowl and blow out the Georgia Bulldogs. Another mistake, in my opinion, was awarding the Heisman Trophy to Tim Tebow. Yes, he had a great year, but what most people don't take into consideration was that 19 of is 22 rushing touchdowns came from within 10 yards, so his "gamebreaking" ability was never really shown. Also, some people seemed surprised at how well he could pass but he played poorly in Florida's three losses to Auburn, LSU and Georgia. Personally, I think Darren McFadden from Arkansas should have won the award, which has lost its luster in recent years. He had five games with at least 150 yards rushing, two with more than 200, including a SEC record-tying 321 against South Carolina. He finished second in the voting both last year and this year, but he has more than shown the consistency and superstardom to deserve this award. However, with all the flaws in college football, fans (including myself) will continue to show up in droves to support their alma maters and watch to see the next great team get knocked off by a small school. Upsets are a fan favorite of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, but they were the story of this year's entire college football season. Happy bowl season to all! |
