Number Two not always second best

It has been a pretty bad year for teams holding the Number Two spot this year.
California, South Florida, Boston College, Oregon, Kansas, West Virginia and now the Indianapolis Colts have lost this year while holding such a position. Certainly, parity has been very much in play this year, making each week more exciting than the next. In the Colts' case, however, it should not be as surprising as one might think. The San Diego Chargers seem to have the Colts' number in recent years, defeating them twice this year and ending their home for an undefeated season, at the RCA Dome, a couple of years ago. So ends another magnificent regular season and disappointing postseason for the Colts, who have been anticipated to be the only team who could knock off the dreaded New England Patriots. Also ending is the Colts' tenure at the RCA Dome as they will start next season at the newly built Lucas Oil Stadium. Questions have arisen surrounding Tony Dungy and whether he will retire partly because he has already enrolled his children in a school in Tampa, Fla. Would it be so bad if Dungy retired? I don't think so, but with one hitch. If he should retire, the Colts should promote Assistant Head Coach Jim Caldwell to the position, if nothing else, to provide a smooth transition and continuity to a change. Also, this would help prevent another team from snatching him up and thus leaving two open positions on the coaching roster. In the meantime, there is still some football left to be played, and only one "Number Two" left on the field. Here's hoping the Green Bay Packers can win this weekend against "The Other Manning," and be like LSU on the college level, who was number two and beat Ohio State, and win the championship. |
