More blah, blah, blah to go

Posted Thursday, January 31, 2008, at 3:34 PM

It's the end of January and I'm already sick to my stomach.

Politics is not a favored topic of discussion for me, and the continuous nonsense presidential candidates are dishing out on a daily basis is truly nauseating.

For me, I like the comedian Lewis Black's take on how we should select a president.

He says we should have the winner of American Idol blindfolded and throw a dart at a map of the United States. Then fly a monkey to the place where the dart lands and the first hand the monkey grabs is the new president.

Crazy? Yes. Effective? Maybe

But I think it may even help stimulate the economy. Instead of people dishing out tens of millions of dollars for candidates to campaign for nearly two years, they can use the money to purchase goods and services and, in the case of corporations, create more jobs.

Now I know this is obviously not an option to choose the president, but I have another option.

Since eliminating the Electoral College probably won't happen in my lifetime either, I think the process should be modified.

As it stands right now, Indiana has 11 Electoral College votes and lets say seven of those votes are for the Democratic candidate, then they win the state and actually get all 11 votes.

Personally, I think it should be a 1 vote = 1 vote situation so the Democratic candidate should get seven and the Republican four in the example I gave above.

Some may say if one party dominates Congress, then that party will automatically win, but the truth is, you never know.

Also, to put added pressure on the Electoral College, I think their votes should be made public, just to see who "betrays" their party to vote the other way.

Now, I understand a state like Indiana may not have a huge influence with a split vote, but in California, which has 55 Electoral College votes, it can make a huge difference if a candidate gets all 55 or just 32, which could happen if my idea were in effect.

Either way, we still have about nine months of 'politics' and 'campaigning' before the successor to the throne is crowned.
