Votes of Indiana Republicans lose meaning in 2008 Primary

The presidential primaries continue to roll on and for Indiana, I see another low voter turnout.
By the time the May 6 Primary Election comes around, 43 states will have already held theirs and, as of right now, only the Democratic nomination is still in the air. Granted, many states moved up their primaries in order to get the snowball rolling down the hill early, and now it is huge. John McCain clinched his Republican nomination with his wins last night, but it had pretty much been decided since "Super Tuesday," which was a month ago. To put the lateness of Indiana's primary in perspective, United States territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands and American Samoa will have held theirs by the time we have a chance to decide where our 84 delegates would go. I understand the current setup allows candidates to go state-to-state, campaigning for votes and delegates, but by the time the last few states get a chance to hit the polls, the amount of candidates goes from an open race down to two, if not already decided. If all the states voted on the same day, like for the General Election, I believe it would lead to a more exciting finish, other than those who raise and spend the most becoming major frontrunners. Some "political fanatics" will disagree of course, stating an extended run of primaries allows people who may not be interested in the races to jump on board, but in my mind, it creates a greater feeling of "Why does my vote matter because everything is decided for me already?" With McCain's win, he no longer has to push very hard for our delegates until he knows who he will face in the General Election, so our primary will probably be one-sided with the majority of voters on the Democratic side rushing to the polls. The current setup has essentially eliminated about half the eligible voters which, in turn, will lead to a low voter turnout once again. I think we should keep all voters in play and hold one specific Primary Election on the same day for all states. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I feel we need to be extremely careful, we need a fighter not someone whom will run when times get tough.
