Exciting football at my alma materPosted Thursday, October 23, 2008, at 7:42 PM
While the Indiana State University football team is still struggling to get a win and end its losing streak, my alma mater has been able to be relatively successful this year.
From the looks of the scores, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks have been playing Jekyll and Hyde so far on their way to posting a 4-3 mark after seven games. After handily winning their first game of the year against Langston, the 'Jacks lost their next three, including a heartbreaking 50-48 loss to South Dakota State -- which the Sycamores play Saturday -- where they led 34-6 with just more than five minutes left in the third quarter. They did flip the story around the next week against Southeastern Louisiana as they erased a 45-21 deficit in the third quarter to win their first conference matchup of the season, 48-45 on a last-second field goal. SFA evened its record at 3-3 with a 49-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan, and followed it up with another thriller this past Saturday. After falling behind 19-0 in the first quarter against Nicholls State, the Lumberjacks fought back and took the lead early in the fourth quarter on their way to a 50-39 victory to be one of two unbeaten teams in Southland Conference play. Even with the up and down play, SFA ranks sixth in Division I-AA, averaging 38.9 points per game, and Quarterback Jeremy Moses is second in passing yards (2299) and first in passing touchdowns with 27. On the downside, they rank 118th out of 125 teams by allowing 36.3 points per game, and 87th in yards allowed with 379.6. One thing is for sure, however, the games certainly can't be boring |
