Winds of change

It's a new era.
This week, a huge change was made which will have an effect on both sides of the country. It has taken a little waiting, but the transition has been finalized. Yes, Obama did win the presidency, but I'm referring to the Allen Iverson-Chauncey Billups trade. Iverson will now be playing for the Detroit Pistons, while Billups will be suiting up for the Denver Nuggets. In my mind, the trade will be a downgrade for both teams this season. Billups is the lone player on the Nuggets' squad who has a reputation for being a defender and is more suited for a half-court offense, which is not Denver's gameplan. On the other end of the trade, Iverson is a slasher who will now have to adjust to the Pistons' physical, slowdown style of offense. His ability to create turnovers and come up with steals will lead to a few more fast break baskets, but overall, I think it will hamper the overall offensive effectiveness of the Pistons. Now next year, I think the Nuggets will be a better team as they adjust to the way Billups plays. However, it will be up in the air how Iverson will affect the Pistons next year because he is in the final year of his contract. Either way, both teams should be in for an extended adjustment period, but in my opinion, the Pistons will still make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, while the Nuggets will struggle once again to squeeze into the playoffs in the stacked Western Conference. |
