April snows brings ... the apocalypse?

There is an old saying out there that "April showers bring May flowers."
If that is the case, then what does April snow bring? I had seen there was the potential for snow in the forecast the past few days, but I guess the Texan in me just wouldn't allow the information in my brain as fact. But sure enough, when I got up this morning there it was. Snow flurries were falling and my windshield was covered. It took a few seconds to sink in because even after living here for about two-and-a-half years, there are still some elements of me that remain in the "Gulf Texan" state of mind. I'm sure many of my friends back home would think it was a sign of the apocalypse if they were to see snow in April. This time of year, I would have had my shorts on for more than a month and preparing for Mother Nature to bring high heat in the 90s, which happens to be a nice reference for baseball's Opening Day. Today begins the six-month, 162-game regular season for Major League Baseball. I used to be addicted to baseball, especially the numbers. However, the love of the game has faded with the steroids debate, questions about the validity of the ages of foreign players and, of course, the $5 hot dogs. While it has been exciting in recent years to see the Red Sox break the "Curse of the Bambino," the White Sox end a long championship drought, and the Rockies and (Devil) Rays make surprising runs to the World Series, I just don't have the passion to watch America's Pastime anymore. Sure, I'll check the standings from time to time and catch an inning or two on TV, but I just can't sit through an entire game without thinking of the Yankees' "let's buy everybody" philosophy. Although the Yankees spent more than $400 million on three free agents this offseason, they somehow managed to "cut" their payroll to a scant $201 million, while the Rays are sitting at about $63 million. Scraping the bottom of the barrel this season is the Florida Marlins with a payroll of just under $37 million. Where is the fun in watching a game when you know you could triple the payroll of one team and still not quite match that of the other? Maybe paranoia may hold true in this case and the snow on Opening Day is a sign of impending doom and the apocalypse is near. |
