Hypothetical Pigskin Season approachingPosted Thursday, June 25, 2009, at 2:45 PM
Although the NBA Draft will commence tonight and baseball is in the middle of its season during these dog days of summer, my mind is already turning to the upcoming football season.
But not for the reason you might think. In the past week or two, I have received e-mails letting me know Fantasy Football season is right around the corner, and I can set my place now. For me, Fantasy Football is a hobby that enhances my love for the game because rather than just paying attention to my favorite teams, my focus is on the league as a whole. I haven't signed back up for the upcoming season yet because, frankly, it's just not my style. Some people are Fantasy Football fanatics, signing up for every league they can and spending hours on end devising trades and roster moves, but that's not my style either. While I do tend to sign up to play in at least five or six leagues, I don't let it consume my weeks and months. I'll spend a maximum of two or three hours a week looking at my teams because it really isn't a major factor in my life; it's just something I do for fun along with my friends here and back home, along with some of my co-workers. Sure, I'll check how I did for a brief moment on Mondays and Tuesdays, but after that I normally don't look at it until Sunday morning, making changes -- if needed -- right before the games kickoff. This year, I figure I'll scale back the number of teams I have to the leagues I won championships in last year, but I usually don't sign up until after the preseason starts, so who knows what will happen by then. Until then, however, Fantasy Football will be in the back of my mind, probably until I get the "Last Chance to Sign Up" messages, as I plan to enjoy the summer and time with my family and friends. |
