'Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?'

Posted Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at 5:35 PM

With all the controversy surrounding the new immigration bill passed in Arizona, I feel this may be a good time to lodge my complaint against foreigners.

Get them off my customer service lines.

Last week, I called the company handling my student loans with hopes of negotiating a payoff of my smaller loan.

Needless to say, when I hung up the phone, I came away with no answers and a load of frustration.

The customer service representative had an accent so thick, and didn't seem to grasp the English language too well, as we exchanged saying "What?" and "Could you repeat that?" numerous times.

When I said I was having a hard time understanding what the person was saying and asked if there was someone else I could speak to, the reply was (I think) "I'm not sure what you are needing."

What I need and would like, is to speak to someone in customer service for an American business who is actually capable of understanding the English language. I don't mind a bit of an accent, but make sure the people who are utilizing the business can actually receive the help they are seeking by providing someone on the other end of the line that can communicate and assist properly as a "customer service representative."

I'm sure there are plenty of us out there with student loans or credit cards who have had to call the company regarding some sort of situation, yet encounter the same issue I just described.

There are all sorts of complaints about outsourcing jobs, but some focus should be pointed toward the customer service lines.

I live in America, utilize American companies, so is it too much to ask to not have our calls redirected to Hong Kong, Venezuela or some other country?

While we're on the topic, how about also adding another feature on the automated system main menu allowing the option of pressing one button to get right to a real-life human, rather than spending 5-10 minutes going through submenus, hoping for that option.

Here's an interesting fact I learned the other day. If you immigrate to Mexico you HAVE to speak Spanish in order to become a citizen. Hmmmm. I feel your pain. It's very frustrating dealing with these types of calls.
