Forget the BCS. I'll be watching the smaller schools.

The college football season starts this week with many interesting storylines.

Instead of looking at the same teams everyone else is, I'm sticking to two small schools.

Indiana State University is still looking to right the ship and get back to at least a .500 record.

They broke a long losing streak last year, but the win over Western Illinois would be their only one of the season.

Given the tough competition on their schedule, I would say a 3-4 win season would be successful one as the Sycamores work their way back to respectability.

Heading south, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, my alma mater, enters the season ranked No. 10 in the FCSNow.com preseason poll.

This comes off a successful 2009 campaign in which the 'Jacks went 10-3, which included a victory over Eastern Washington in the opening round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

They have come a long way in a short time after going 0-11 in 2007, but the early part of the schedule looks daunting.

After starting the season by traveling to College Station to face Texas A&M, the face No. 12 Northern Iowa in their third game, and No. 11/conference foe McNeese State in game five, with both games on the road.

Also on the slate is an Oct. 30 matchup against Texas State, which is just outside of the Top 25 in the FCS rankings, as well as a trip to Reliant Stadium on Oct. 23, to face rival Sam Houston State.

While many fans will be following the big teams like Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida, etc., I plan to keep an eye on these two lesser-known teams to see what happens in what will surely be a wacky season for both.
