It's fun to cover champions
Posted Monday, November 2, at 1:53 PM
I've been in this business for approximately 10 years.

And until about six years ago, I had never covered a state champion in anything.

But I had the opportunity to cover two track "stars" at their peak performances win individual state titles.

And now, I have had the opportunity to cover yet another state champion.

On Oct. 31, the Northview Marching Knights traveled to Lucas Oil Stadium hoping to defend their 2008 Indiana State School Music Association Class B State Title.

And they did just that.

Just like those other two state finals' trips, this year's was just as exciting to cover.

And maybe more so.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I never had the opportunity to advance as a member of marching band to the ISSMA State Finals. The band I was in was one spot off (to the best of my recollection) when I was a senior in high school.

But the Northview Marching Knights have made this a regular thing, almost as if it is old hat.

The Marching Knights have advanced to state finals for as long as current members have been alive.

That is so impressive.

This group of kids and staff -- current and former -- annually give the community something to be proud of.

No matter what troubles are affecting the community or the world, at least for one weekend, the community can revel in the Marching Knights' success.

With all the barking that goes on in any community, whether it be about arrests, money troubles, H1N1, etc., about this time every year, people in this community come together in a show of support for this band.

That is so wonderful to see.

I was so hungry when I was coming home Saturday from state finals that I had to make a pit stop at the Cloverdale exit for something to eat.

Rather than getting back on Interstate-70, I elected to just head north on State Road 231 until I came to United States 40.

As I was coming into Clay County, I could feel the excitement in the air.

It had already been posted online (Facebook, MySpace, etc.) that the Marching Knights had won the Class B State Title.

There were a ton of police and fire vehicles waiting for the band at Great Dane to escort them back to the high school.

Driving into town, anyone could see herds of people lining up along U.S. 40 to congratulate the Knights as they came into town.

The Marching Knights, again, brought the community together.

For a few moments, we all forgot all of our problems. We forgot that, currently, the world seems bleak.

We lined up to congratulate these kids for their hard work and dedication.

We thanked them for another year of excellence.

We thanked them for being special.

We came together, even if for only a few moments.

And that's what makes it so special.

It was one year ago this week ...

OK, unlike Paul McCartney, I couldn't come up with a clever one-liner to begin this blog, much like he did with the song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Still, it was one year ago this week that my fiancée and I were running around the house like chickens without heads...

My beloved Pacers: Ugh(?)(!)
Posted Friday, October 23, at 1:27 PM

A once proud franchise, now it almost feels like the Indiana Pacers have officially hit rock bottom. The only place to go from here is up and forward. But the possibility of that happening this year may not be all that great. Last year, the Pacers finished 36-46. They have not had a winning record since the 2004-05 season when they finished at 44-38...

Nashville: What a Town!
Posted Friday, October 16, at 8:55 AM

I have driven through the great city of Nashville, Tenn., before, but I had never had a chance to check out some of the sites. Until this past week. On Tuesday, my fiancee and I drove to the "Music City" to see a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame...

Are the MLB playoffs just around the corner?
Posted Monday, October 5, at 10:05 AM

Despite the one-game playoff The Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins will play Tuesday, the 2009 Major League Baseball season officially ended Sunday. Typically in the past, I would have been incredibly excited. The playoffs begin this week. The road to the World Series starts now...

Put Chicago in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Posted Monday, September 28, at 10:08 AM

I really think any fan of music should openly be asking who in the world nominates artists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Recently, the nominees for 2010 were announced. Leading the way are ABBA, Donna Summer, Genesis, KISS, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Hollies and LL Cool J...

A record that will never be broken
Posted Tuesday, September 22, at 9:49 AM

The date September 22 has major significance in baseball history. On this date, in 1911, arguably the greatest pitcher ever to live won the final game of his Major League Baseball career. Denton True "Cy" Young picked up his 511th victory, shutting out the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-0...

Gone but not forgotten

The world of entertainment has been rocked hard by the deaths of several celebrities this year. It was reported Monday evening that Patrick Swayze, known for his roles in the movies "Dirty Dancing," and "Ghost," died after a 20-month battle against pancreatic cancer. He was 57...

Going out on the limb and it's shaky
Posted Tuesday, September 8, at 8:42 AM

As of right now, everybody is 0-0. The 2009 regular season for the National Football League season officially begins Thursday evening, when the Tennessee Titans travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers. Once again, Sundays will be filled with football, football, football...

The memories will remain
Posted Tuesday, September 1, at 9:29 AM

Late Sunday evening, as the day was finally coming to a close and Brazil Times' Sports Editor Carey Fox and I were finally putting the Monday paper to bed, I caught a glimpse of something on the Internet that intrigued me. Despite all the fires raging around Los Angeles, stars of daytime television flocked together for the Daytime Emmys...
