Change is a necessary evilPosted Monday, August 6, 2007, at 6:57 AM
Readers of The Brazil Times have witnessed the paper go through several changes in recent weeks.
Change is a hard thing to handle. In fact, most of the time, we don't particularly like it.
For example, we don't like that subtle change as youth when our mothers replace the green beans she normally cooked with the meatloaf with brussel sprouts.
Wait a minute. Was that just me?_It may very well have been.
But I digress.
Change is difficult to accept and understand. But it is necessary.
The Brazil Times recently underwent many changes.
For example, subscribers are now getting their paper with their morning mail.
That change also changed the daily schedules for the Times' reporters.
Now, reporters are practically on call all day, with only Saturday acting as a buffer between shifts.
This has proven difficult to deal with initially as reporters (myself included)_have had to deal with different hours.
In a way, it's a good thing. I no longer am getting up at 3:30 a.m. Monday-Friday.
Rather, now I can sleep in a bit and still be in the office a good portion of the day.
There were other changes recently to The Brazil Times that we hope readers like.
We wanted to update the look of the paper and have done so in order to make it more reader-friendly.
By doing so, the front page of the paper has a different look now.
We have added teases to the top of the paper recently, allowing the readers to get a glimpse of what is inside.
Cosmetic changes were made to the paper in order for it to be more user-friendly.
We changed the flag of the paper, cleaning it up a bit and adding the teases including sky boxes above the flag.
We have attempted to place items in the paper more orderly so readers know where to look.
We have started using rules on certain pages. The purpose of rules is to separate items on pages and to make it a cleaner paper.
Our hope is that readers have noticed the slight cosmetic changes that have been made and are in favor of them. Feel free to stop in from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday to discuss them. Or give us a call at 446-2216 or drop an e-mail. We want to hear your opinion.
A simple definition of change is to cause to be different or to give a completely different for or appearance to.
Change -- as stated before -- can sometimes be difficult to accept.
However, it is a necessary evil in everyday life.
Not everything stays the same.
Sure, we've had some difficulties with some of the changes we've implemented.
But we're taking the necessary steps in order to make sure everything works like a well-oiled machine.
The Brazil Times' staff asks all readers to be patient with these changes.
Even though some changes have taken place, the staff will not be making changes on a regular basis.
Although change sometimes is necessary, there is also a necessity for order. For regularity.
For the purpose of providing the public -- and staffers -- something to be proud of.
We hope that is the ultimate change.
