No opinion formulated herePosted Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at 3:25 PM
This blog shouldn't be too long, yet some things need to be said.
I am disappointed, as are several others, that Clay Community Schools and the Clay Community Classroom Teachers Association are at an impasse regarding contract issues. It is disappointing that for five years, a settlement has not been met. It is disappointing that contract negotiations continue to fluster not only teachers and board members, but also the majority of the public. It's sad this has been an ongoing eyesore to Clay County. But, still, as a journalist, I cannot and will not formulate an opinion on the matter. The duty of a journalist is to report facts. Sometimes, those facts are skewed by some who don't necessarily want everything to get out. Sometimes, those facts are incorrect because of "operator error." But, a journalist must only work with what they are given. If I were to formulate an opinion regarding the issue, it may lean toward the side of teachers. After all, my mother is a teacher. She has been for more than 20 years. I had her for a couple of months when I was in the fourth grade. My mother absolutely loves teaching. It is her life. I have sat down and discussed this issue with my mother. But not to the point of the two of us stomping off the other way, unwilling to discuss anything. I just hope that both sides can reach an agreement. I hope that both sides can come together and figure out a way to end this. It would work out for all sides in the end. It might end days and nights of continued stress. Who knows? Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Dear Jason,
I am so glad that you sat down and talked with your mother, who is a teacher, about the current state of Clay County education. I don't know your mother but I am sure since she is in the profession that you now have a much better understanding of how bad this situation really is. I know you would never wish on your mother the same treatment and disrespect that the Clay County School Board has forced on us.
Why can't the school board get this resolved? You are correct in an eyesore. What business, family or anyone else would be proud to say we have the LONGEST unsettled contract? What does that say to the value of education? No matter which side anyone takes, why can't a fair settlement be reached and settled? As a taxpayer, land owner, parent, and life long community member of Clay County, I find this to be completley unresonalbe that we have an unsettled contract! If you drive 15 miles west of Clay County to Vigo County, you'll find a completely different take on education. The administration, school board, and local community leaders Value and Respect the educational system! Let's do what is right for OUR students and offer the teachers a fair settlement and MOVE ON for the Best EDUCATION POSSIBLE!!!!!!
I think that Clay County is very fortunate to have the talented teachers that they have and if the contracts aren't settled, then who is to say the schools will remain with such strong teaching staff. My children have always gone to vigo county schools and my oldest just transfered to Northview. He is amazed by the excellency he is now experiencing in the school system......Clay County needs to take notice and appreciate how great their schools are.
