Hodge Podge

The best part of writing a blog, in my opinion of course, is that there are limitless possibilities regarding what to write about.

In fact, sometimes, blogs can be written about anything.

That's what this will be. A hodge podge of information.

Hopefully, you'll be able to keep up.

On the State of the Union:

Did anybody really care Monday evening? Being in The Times' office while it began said it all. As coverage of the State of the Union began, two editorial staffers immediately grimaced.

I'd be willing to bet that few bothered to even watch or listen if they were watching. For one, reading a book rather than hearing a 45-minute useless speech was probably more interesting.

I myself was looking forward to hearing the speech, but turned the channel when I heard the tell-tale signs of squirming.

I just couldn't put the staffers with me through the misery. So, we watched Oklahoma State play Oklahoma (snooze). I searched high and low for something to watch while we were preparing Tuesday's paper. Wrestling on USA didn't sound like something worth watching and the basketball game, good grief. So, we flipped it to the Food Network and watched how Cheetos were made.

On the most famous ankle in the world:

Who cares about Tom Brady and the ankle boot? Honestly, I just don't care. A story came across Associated Press talking about how Brady missed three practices last week but was on the field Monday preparing for Sunday's Super Bowl.

I hope Brady takes the same approach when it comes to being a father.

Hmm.

Too bad, so sad:

How sad it was to hear of the passing of Heath Ledger. Sure, I've seen him in a few movies, like "The Patriot," and "10 Things I Hate About You." He was a good actor.

His passing, however, forced me to drift to youtube.com to search for trailers for the upcoming Batman movie.

All I can say is wow! His portrayal of the Joker, Batman's infamous rival, looks like it will be spectacular. Very tormented.

While it's extremely sad to see anyone younger than 30 with so much talent die, why didn't people react like this in any way when Brad Renfro died just two weeks ago?

I'll tell you why. It was expected.

Renfro had a long history of drug problems. He had run-ins with the law. And he was a typical child star. Someone who appeared to not be able to handle the pressure.

Unlike Renfro, Ledger's death was completely unexpected. No one saw this coming.

Sometimes, there are situations where media outlets will have a prepared obituary for certain stars. Former Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley fit into this category. From what I understand, a newspaper in Seattle had an obituary already written for him when he died.

I've already heard that the Associated Press has an obituary prepared for Britney Spears.

By the way, that old saying of celebrities dying in threes? It happened here in a matter of weeks, with the passing of Renfro, Ledger and Christian Brando this past week.

Thank goodness, only a few days away:

One of last year's best television shows is gearing up for its 2008 arrival.

No, I'm not talking about "Lost." Sure, it is a good show. But that second season? Give me a break.

I'm talking about "Jericho."

The show CBS pulled the plug on until fans revolted.

Remember all the peanuts and e-mails when the network axed this show?

And I'm still ticked that Lennie James (who portrays Robert Hawkins in the show) was not nominated for anything.

His character is tremendous!

Anyway, the show is back on the air beginning Feb. 12, a Tuesday evening. Apparently, it is scheduled to air at 10 p.m., putting it up against "Law & Order: SVU" (on NBC) and "Boston Legal" (on ABC).

There was much speculation after CBS was forced to bring the show back that it would be pitted against shows where it would not do good.

However, with the writers strike ongoing, "Jericho" may actually fair well this season. Even with only seven to eight episodes.

By the way, here's a quick look at the statistics surrounding the show and the new shows CBS brought in.

First, "Jericho" averaged 9.5 million viewers in its only full season, ranking 48th overall, according to Wikipedia.com.

Its ratings were down following a three-month hiatus and it was destroyed by "American Idol" in the second half of the season last year, but what show isn't destroyed by this piece of mindless junk?

However, a quick search of the Internet brought up these statistics.

CBS introduced five new shows to its lineup this year, including "Viva Laughlin," "Cane," "The Big Bang Theory," "Moonlight," and "Kid Nation."

None of these shows topped 8 million in viewers and each saw its rating drop. "Viva Laughlin," by the way, lasted only two episodes before CBS pulled the plug.

In fact, according to statistics on the Internet, "Cane" had a viewer ship of 7.94 million during the week of Dec. 10-16.

Why was "Jericho" canceled? One answer, money.

It cost too much to make.

But, it's back, thanks to fans complaints, peanuts, e-mails, etc.

Here's to seeing the five new shows ratings not being as wonderful as CBS believed.

Long live "Jericho!"

Amen sir.

Jericho is the best show on (and off) network television. Hawkins started as a character who just blended with the crowd but began to set himself apart as the series progressed.

If people choose to be in the entertainment business, they should also assume the responsibility that comes with it. I feel bad for any person who battles any type of addiction but if they want to be in the spotlight, they can't complain when everyone is looking at them.

People in the print business do have to handle public scrutiny on a daily basis and they make nothing near what celebs make.

Long live Jericho

So you saw Brad Renfro's death coming because he was a child star and had some legal troubles...Did you know him and what his life was about...Because I repeat this again, no one understands the entertainment business unless you are in it...People do not realize how demanding a job it is...How you always have to be on and people are always wanting something from you...And for your info the AP has an obituary on every celebrity, so they are one step ahead of the game...Do you think you could handle the public scrutiny and fame? Take this to heart, from someone who is in the entertainment business and sees this happen daily...
