Remember when?

Ten years ago, Major League Baseball was riding on an all-time high.
Cal Ripken Jr. -- after breaking Lou Gehrig's iron man record of consecutive games -- finally sat. The New York Yankees won 125 games in 1998, crowning the season with a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres in the World Series. And, two of baseball's most beloved players, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, were on their way in making history. McGwire and Sosa both eclipsed Roger Maris' single-season record for home runs that season. McGwire finished the year with 70 round-trippers while Sosa ended the campaign with 66. But, 10 years later, their historic march is something MLB would more than likely be happy to forget. Only a few years after the record-breaking season, McGwire was accused -- in a book by former teammate Jose Canseco -- of using steroids. Both McGwire and Sosa appeared before Congress during a hearing, where McGwire would not elaborate on the book or his past. How quickly things can change. Back in 1998, both McGwire and Sosa were the toast of the nation. Who can forget McGwire grabbing Sosa and hoisting him in the air, or the two of them bashing forearms. They were helping reshape baseball's image, especially after the strike-shortened season only years before. But things can change. Both McGwire and Sosa were suddenly villains. They were both everything that was wrong with baseball. Poster boys for all the wrong reasons. |
