How many of you predicted this?

Seriously, how many people out there actually believed the Super Bowl would come down to this?
Did anybody, and I mean anybody, think the Arizona Cardinals would make the Super Bowl? Those same Arizona Cardinals -- a team that has long lived in infamy -- will now play in the biggest NFL game of every year. Actually, perhaps people will tune in to Sunday's game to watch more than those great 30-second commercials. But I doubt it. Me thinks this year's Super Bowl will not have the greatest of ratings. Unfortunately, because Arizona made the big game, I have a feeling it won't be watched by as many as if Philadelphia were playing Pittsburgh. Or Pittsburgh against Dallas, the NFL's hope every year (ratings giant). It's no different than other professional leagues. In baseball, they want the Yankees against the Dodgers, although the Yankees against the Cubs would draw unbelievable numbers I'm sure. In the NBA, they always want Boston or the Knicks against the Lakers. Boring. Give me somebody who's really playing for that ring. I want to see players leaving everything out on the court, field, etc. That's fun. That's what made this past year's Major League Baseball World Series so enjoyable. Tampa Bay in the World Series? Surely you're joking. But that did happen. Sure, the Rays lost to the Phillies, but it was still fun to watch. The NBA? Lakers-Celtics? Yawn. It's already happened. Been there. Done that. And now we have the Steelers against the Cardinals. The only thing that would make this even more exciting (with the exception of the Vikings, of course) would be if an AFC team that had never been to the Super Bowl reached it. But the countdown has begun. There are only a few days remaining before the last game of this season is played. Well, the last game worth watching anyway as the Pro Bowl is just right around the corner and I still haven't found anyone that actually spends a Sunday afternoon watching that completely meaningless game. But this week will be loaded with sports stories about the Cardinals. There will be the reminders of how Kurt Warner spent time bagging groceries before joining the St. Louis Rams and leading them to a Super Bowl victory. Count the amount of times the talking heads mention Warner and his grocery-bagging days. Really, mark it down on a piece of paper and stick on the fridge. It will be amusing. There will be stories about how Edgerrin James will be playing in his first Super Bowl. He left the Colts the season before they won the Super Bowl. Sure, Colts' owner Jim Irsay provided a ring to "Edge," but it's not the same. There will be plenty of coverage of Larry Fitzgerald, who has turned this year's playoff run into his own personal stage. Unfortunately, playing in Arizona, Fitzgerald doesn't always get the attention he deserves. But he is arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL today. But back to the subject of predictions. Honestly, did anyone pick the Cardinals to reach the Super Bowl? If you did, comment. Pick on my horrible picks. Although, at least I had Pittsburgh in the big dance. Did you? |
