Update on Hollywood remakes

Posted Monday, July 27, 2009, at 9:51 AM

Last week, I proposed a list of 10 possible remakes Hollywood could look into doing (OK, it was actually 12 if you count Star Wars Episodes I, II and III).

The blog came from the possibility of putting together a list of movies people in Hollywood could consider making remakes of.

Only weeks ago, I found myself disgusted that Hollywood is remaking "The Karate Kid."

Some movies are just better left alone.

However, some, on the other hand, could use a facelift.

Here were my suggestions:

* Flash Gordon,

* The Creature from the Black Lagoon,

* Star Wars Episodes I, II and III,

* Barefoot in the Park,

* The Thing,

* Escape from New York,

* Dreamscape,

* Flowers in the Attic,

* Streets of Fire, and

* The Greatest American Hero.

I offered readers the opportunity to comment by adding other suggestions and received one.

One reader, Anodos, suggested a remake of Highlander. Good choice, by the way.

The concept, as Anodos stated, was really cool. The movie was cool as well, but it definitely is dated. It is obvious it was made in the 1980s and -- in my opinion -- has not stood the test of time. Still, Highlander was a cool movie.

Another reader, Leo Southworth, who actually gave me the idea of putting that blog together, couldn't think of any movie that might fit the mold.

Well, Leo, I thought of a few more that could be remade today with better technology, giving the movie a fresh update:

* Red Dawn -- This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I loved the idea of high school students taking on another country's army. It was really neat. And the movie was also very patriotic. Why not remake it, especially in the age we live in currently. Putting together a cast, however, may prove difficult,

* The Running Man -- Honestly, Stephen King movies have never been all that great. Sure, "The Stand," was really cool, but it was made for television. The Running Man, however, could use a facelift, as could many of the films made from King's novels or short stories,

* Back to School -- A very funny Rodney Dangerfield film from the mid-1980s, also starring a young Robert Downey Jr. Toss Bill Murray into the mix and figure, what the heck,

* Top Gun -- It wasn't very good, admit it. It was eye candy. Throw in a couple new actors and maybe something good may come about,

* Shazam! -- This Saturday morning live-action show from the mid-70s would be really neat on the silver screen. It has long been rumored it was on its way, but few details have come about,

* The Dukes of Hazard -- The film, which only came out a couple of years ago, was horrible. Why not give it better treatment? and

* The Hardy Boys -- Rumor has it that Ben Stiller has been given the OK to make "The Hardy Men," an updated remake of the popular television series that ran in the mid-1970s. It is also rumored to star Tom Cruise. Oh No! Ugh! Please no.

Celebrity gossip pages are afire with news about Jessica Simpson's dog -- and the word is that Jessica Simpson's dog has been kidnapped by a coyote. The dog was a Maltipoo -- which is a hybrid Maltese and poodle. It's the kind of dog that whines and yaps too much and offends people with a serious and superior breed of animal. For instance, guitarist Zakk Wylde is a noted Rottweiler owner, a loyal and stable breed, fantastic with children that would disembowel any errant coyote that had enough stupidity and hubris to dare walk into their area. (Zakk Wylde is also known for writing his own songs -- something which Simpson is unable to do. Then again, he has talent.) Still, if Jessica Simpson's dog lives, she is offering an installment loans worth for the safe return of her prized pooch.
