The sweet smell of springPosted Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 8:19 PM
Ah, I can smell spring just right around the corner.
Recently, I found myself outside with my sandals on. What a wonderful feeling. Another sign that spring is right around the corner? Baseball. Typically, during this time of year, I get very excited about the start of the Major League Baseball season. But by July? I'm ready for football. Why, you ask? My Cincinnati Reds haven't had much luck in recent seasons. In fact, it's been about 10 years since the Reds were a legitimate playoff threat. But that's why there is such an allure with baseball. At the beginning of the year, every team is on the same plate. They all have to play 162 games and you never know. You just never know. Heading into the 2010 season, the Reds look like a team that could cause some problems. They appear to have a solid pitching staff, barring injury. Hopefully, Aaron Harang will return to form and Bronson Arroyo will be able to pitch the whole season like he does typically in the second half of the year. Homer Bailey finally showed flashes of what he is capable of late last year. In addition, Johnny Cueto appears to be on track for another good year and closer Francisco Cordero will be back. As far as the offense, the Reds have some good bats. At first base, Joey Votto is solid while second baseman Brandon Phillips continues to post good numbers. Former Jasper standout Scott Rolen is also on the roster. There are a lot of question marks but the Reds appear to have a fighting chance. At least for a few months. I've always been a huge fan of the Reds. Even though I barely remember the Big Red Machine, I do remember it. And I remember 1990, when nobody gave the Reds a chance to defeat the Oakland A's in the World Series. And they did just that. There always a chance. You just never know. What do you know, I thought I was the only Reds fan in Clay County. Good to know that Jason is also a fan. I'm with you Jason in hoping that "our Reds" can finally give us something to cheer about. Maybe moving their spring traing site to Arizona will change their luck. Go Reds!! Welcome spring!!!
