Jellybean is a drummerPosted Monday, July 26, 2010, at 7:42 AM
For days now -- I shudder to use the term weeks because I really don't know -- Merry has told me on a daily basis when the baby is kicking.
It seems to happen at the least opportune moments. For me, that is.
We'd be sitting in the family room during an evening and she'd say, "Jellybean just kicked again."
I'd go home for lunch and she'd explain to me how Jellybean kicked six times that morning.
I think Jellybean is using Merry's insides as a kick drum, patting out a beat while sitting there just waiting to come out.
But one evening, I actually felt one of the kicks.
Although I have known for several months now that we were expecting our first child, it was at that moment that reality appeared to set it.
We were sitting in the family room, watching the evening news, when Merry said Jellybean just kicked.
I jumped at the chance to feel one of those bass drum hits.
Placing my hand on her stomach, I patiently waited.
Then, there it was.
Faint, yet there.
A slight jolt.
I've shared with you this photograph before, but I couldn't resist putting it up again.
The picture above is from when Merry and I traveled to Indianapolis for testing.
While at the Indiana University Medical Center, they provided us with some photos of the baby.
Knowing we did not want to know if Jellybean was a boy or a girl, they were very careful to not take pictures that would give away the surprise.
But this photograph was so sweet.
In it, Jellybean appears to be giving the "thumbs up," indicating "I'm fine. Just let me continue to play the drums."
Maybe Jellybean's got a whole drumset in there.
