Chicago (the band): Denied again!Posted Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at 8:11 AM
I guess it's that time of year again.
On Tuesday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- based in Cleveland -- announced the 2011 class. Next year, those joining the hallowed hall will include Neil Diamond, the Alice Cooper Band, Dr. John, Darlene Love and Tom Waits. In addition, Leon Russell was honored with a musical excellence award, which was known before as the sideman category. As well, music executives Jac Holzman and Art Rupe were given the Ahmet Ertegun awards. First-time nominees Bon Jovi failed to make the cut, as did LL Cool J, the J. Geils Band, The Beastie Boys, Chic, Donna Summer, Donovan and more. For many years now, I've taken to rambling about how the people that make these decisions have failed. Again this year, they failed. Here's a small list of musicians or groups that are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: * The Moody Blues, * Chubby Checker, * KISS, * Rush, and * Chicago. I really don't have issue with most of the selections regarding this every year. What I have issue with, however, is how Chicago, a band that has sold records with the best of them, is not in this. While this may not be the case now, at one point, Chicago had sold more albums than any other United States band with the exception of the Beach Boys, who, coincidentally, are in this Hall of Fame. I just don't understand how this band has gone overlooked all these years. Someone really should take time out to explain this in some sort of detail because it just doesn't make sense. Update I forgot to mention these other bands or artists that have been snubbed by this worthwhile organization: * Depeche Mode, * The Cure, * Hall and Oates, * E.L.O., * Heart, and * Journey. There are others, I'm sure. But again, Chicago not being honored by this organization is beyond me. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I once had a discussion on line with a person from the HoF. I was told that there were basically like 5 criteria. I don't remember now what they were, but basically, some will never make it. They do not care how long you have been together (Rush 3 have been together since like 75), how may albums you have sold or produced. How many concerts you have played or any of the popularity class criteria. I went once many years ago. I was not impressed. I will not go back again.
I also went to the HoF a few years ago and, like you, don't plan on going back.
